Toshimaen Amusement Park is a short walk from Toshimaen Station on the Seibu Line and the Oedo Subway Line. In addition to its attractions and the pool, it is also famous for its hydrangea flowers. Every June, Toshimaen hosts its Hydrangea Festival and along with its featured light up show, it is a definitive recommendation to see hydrangeas in Tokyo. From here, we’d like to share the appeal of the Hydrangea Festival in Toshimaen Amusement Park.
Come see the Hydrangea Festival at the start of summer

Toshimaen, which is run by the Toshimaen Company, is popular both as an amusement park and for one of the many places where you can see hydrangea flowers in Tokyo. Every June, many people come to Toshimaen to see hydrangeas during its festival. The Hydrangea Garden near the east gate entrance is where you can find the festival’s main spot. There you can discover the beauty of 10,000 hydrangea flowers of about 150 various species such as mountain hydrangeas, climbing hydrangeas, and cultivated hydrangeas. The picture provided above is of Mizuiro no Oka (Blue Hill), taken from the Ohanami (Flower Viewing) Terrace. Many people come here to enjoy the hydrangeas of early summer as opposed to the actual amusement park.

Walk down the white blossoming path of Annabelle flowers

Toshimaen Park’s hydrangea garden is full of cool blue flowers. What stands out within that garden is a white path full of Annabelle flowers, or white hydrangeas. Annabelles, which are native to North America, is a kind of flower which is easy to grow and is popularly known as white hydrangeas. The Annabelle flowers which bloom along the white path are as pure as snow and compared to the common blue hydrangeas, offer an atmosphere that feels right out of a fairy tale.

During the Hydrangea Festival at the start of summer, you can ride the Hydrangea Express (or Ajisai-gou), a small carnival train which runs through the hydrangea garden of Toshimaen. Since the train runs at a slow pace, you can get a great view of the garden’s beautiful hydrangeas. Furthermore, you can also get some nice pictures of the train’s cute design. The Hydrangea Express which runs during the Hydrangea Festival upon the beginning of summer is considered to be a powerful symbol.
Enjoy the park's Hydrangea Light Up Show

On weekends (please be sure to confirm the operating hours) during the Hydrangea Festival, you can enjoy Hydrangea Night, which is a light up show of hydrangea flowers. Compared to the day time, the beauty of the light up show at night comes straight out of a fantasy story. Since there isn’t much ‘light up’ displays featuring hydrangeas within Tokyo, Toshimaen Park is considered a famous place for such brilliant shows.
Come see Toshimaen Park’s Hydrangea Festival
This concludes our introduction of Toshimaen, a popular theme park famous for its hydrangeas. Hydrangea season in Toshimaen runs between the end of May to the end of June. Its highlights are its 10,000 hydrangeas flowers of 150 species, which bloom at the start of summer. In addition to Hydrangea Night, the staff can provide you with tour guides, or you can participate in other events such as photo contests during the Hydrangea Festival. Near the hydrangea garden, you can have a meal and take a break at the Ajisai Chaya, or the Hydrangea Tea House.
Within Toshimaen Park, there are plenty of places where hydrangeas grow beside the hydrangea garden. You can also enjoy the scenery of hydrangeas surrounding rides such as the merry go round and the roller coaster, which makes it rather distinguishing as an amusement park. For those wanting to find the best hydrangeas that Tokyo has to offer, look no further than Toshimaen Park’s Hydrangea Season.
