Kuantan is a lovely coastal city built along the South China Sea and the Kuantan River, and also serves as the capital of the state of Pahang. Visitors to Kuantan should not only expect beautiful beaches but also a scenic river bustling with life and activity, and there are plenty more things to do here. You can find yourself getting a tan at Teluk Cempedak or watching sea turtles at Cherating one day and then going on a Kuantan River cruise the next. Kuantan also has a vibrant urban culture with plenty of attractions; shoppers can hang out at local malls including East Coast Mall and Berjaya Megamall, while families can meet animals at Zoo Teruntum.

While in the city you shouldn’t miss a visit to the beautiful Sultan Ahmad Shah Mosque, Pahang’s state mosque. The structure was completed in 1994 and blends modern architectural influences with age-old traditions. Tanjung Lumpur is another place you should check out, and the fishing village is situated just across the river from the city center. You can savor traditional dishes and local favorites such as ikan bakar (grilled fish) in the village. A visit to Kuantan 188 will also prove to be fun as its observation deck offers spectacular views of the city. It even houses a Japanese restaurant and I would love to try out some of the dishes here.

If you’re planning a vacation in Malaysia, you should put this wonderful seaside city on your itinerary. To help look for a place to stay, read on and see the top beach resorts in Kuantan, Malaysia.

Beach life in Kuantan

The coastal city of Kuantan draws in many tourists yearning for a beach day, and there are a few beaches in the city where you can have lots of fun in the sun. Teluk Cempedak is perhaps the city’s most popular beach and is lined with fast food joints, hawker stalls, and other eateries. Teluk Tongkang is another beach that’s a short walk along a boardwalk that extends from Teluk Cempedak, and a trail breaks off from the boardwalk that leads to Bukit Pelindung Recreational Forest. If you don’t mind rocky beaches, you can head to Pantai Batu Hitam. The beach is littered with pebble stones and large rocks that are increasingly exposed during low tide.

Kuantan’s culinary scene is unique and you can mainly get Chinese and Malay dishes here. Popular seafood options include patin tempoyak, which is a fermented durian curry with fish, and mee calong, which is a type of noodle soup with fish balls, tofu, and egg. Sign me up for some mee calong!

Pahang’s climate is generally warm and humid. If you prefer a placid beach vacation you should avoid visiting during the monsoon, which extends from late October until the beginning of March. However, the monsoon swells are popular among surfers and enthusiasts of other watersports.
