Another festival that happens in Mission District, San Francisco Carnaval’s Grand Parade and Festival is a two-day event that showcases cultures of Latin America as well as Carribean arts and customs. The festival’s scene concentrates on Harrison Street and features arts, food, crafts, music, and more. One of the highlights of this festival is the Grand Parade, which features cultural floats and different dance groups depicting different cultures. An example is the Caribbean contingents, which include Bahamas, Trinidad, Cuba, and Puerto Rico, dancers. Drawing 100,000 people every year, San Francisco’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of the largest celebrations of the feast of St. Patrick in the world. Since the parade is a huge event and is joined and attended by many, it often happened over a weekend. The parade is composed of many local Irish dance companies and bands, and extravagant floats, as well as the city’s officials, such as firemen, policemen, and politicians. The parade starts from 2nd Street, passes through Market Street, and ends at Civic Center Plaza, which is the primary location of all the festivities.

3. Chinese New Year Festival and Parade

The biggest Chinese New Year celebration outside of Asia, the Chinese New Year Festival and Parade started in the 1860s, was brought to you by Southwest Airlines, and hosted by the San Francisco Chinese Chamber of Commerce. It aims to share the Chinese culture with the locals of California and the world as a whole. The parade starts from Market Street and ends in Chinatown. It is one of the grandest parades you’ll ever see, which is a unification of the Chinese Lantern Festival and a regular American street parade. It features extravagant floats, lion dancers, firework displays, acrobats, marching bands, and for the finale and the start of the parade, the Golden Dragon. The Golden Dragon is from Foshan, China, and has a length of 268 ft (87.78 m), which 100 members of the martial art group, White Crane, carry during the parade.

5. North Beach Festival

On its 65th year, the North Beach Festival is one of the largest street fairs that happen in San Francisco every summer. It is a two-day event in Grant Avenue that features over 30 food vendors, more or less 100 arts and crafts stalls, and a few stages for live music performances for the entertainment of all attendees. Also, you’ll find Italian street painting and an area where kids can draw using chalks. Additionally, on both afternoons, there’s a ceremony dedicated to the blessing of the animals.

6. San Francisco Fringe Festival

A festival for all theater fanatics, who want to experience something different, watch raw talents, and see local plays, San Francisco Fringe Festival is the biggest grassroots theater celebration in San Francisco, which showcases indie theater. Here, you can choose to watch shows from among 100 theater performances by over 20 indie companies. The venue of the plays will all be at EXIT Theatre Plex, which is in Downtown San Francisco. It has three private venues that can be occupied by between 36 to 80 per venue.

7. Litquake, San Francisco’s Literary Festival

A festival is San Francisco for all booklovers, Litquake, San Francisco’s Literary Festival is the largest and longest-running literary event in San Francisco that started in 1999. In its first years, the festival only happened for a day. But, today, the celebration lasts for more or less a week. A world-renowned LGBT parade, San Francisco Gay Pride, is a festival to celebrate and at the same time raise awareness, for the rights of the lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender, and their allies. It is held every last week of June and starts from 10 am up to 4 pm. The Pride Parade in San Francisco in 2019 was said to be the largest gathering of LGBT people and their allies throughout the world. It was attended by over 289 parade contingents such as Dykes on Bikes, Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), LGBT-affirming religious groups, and more. 11. Chinatown Mid-Autumn Moon Festival

Started as a way to boost the energy of the people after the 1989 earthquake, Chinatown Mid-Autumn Moon Festival has been an annual celebration from then on. The celebration starts and ends with a parade. At the kick-off parade, you’ll find lion dancers, marching bands, ribbon dancers, traditional costumes, giant puppets, and more. And at the end of the celebration parade, you can see a White Crane Dragon Show. Also, there are many shows and exhibitions to watch, such as martial arts demonstrating their fighting routines, acrobats doing their stunts, and dancers moving fluidly with the music. Additionally, it has numerous food stands and stalls selling various items like arts and crafts.

12. Fleet Week San Francisco

All proceeds of the event are given to the Surfrider Foundation San Francisco chapter. 18. Juneteenth

Another festival taking place at Fillmore Street, Juneteenth is a celebration of the abolition of slavery. The festivity happens every 15th of July, which is the anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, at 11am with a parade. Apart from the usual food stand, arts and crafts booths, and vendors selling varieties of items, it also features more meaningful things like a job fair and health and wellness fair, as well as car shows, fashion shows, and beauty fairs. 19. Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival

A three-day music festival that is non-commercial and free for all, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival started in 2001 and sponsored by Warren Hellman, a venture capitalist, who wants the event to be music and community-centered. The businessman doesn’t want the festival to be bombarded with many product placements. During its early years, the festival only features bluegrass musicians, but as time went by, it has opened its doors to many artists from different styles of music, gaining more followers than ever. As proof of its popularity, in 2011, it drew more or less 750,000 people during its three-day run.
