Lucca
No matter which hotel you pick for your stay in Lucca, I recommend you climb these towers to enhance your experience in the province. Aside from the 14th-century Torre Guinigi, a wealthy family tower, and Torre delle Ore, the medieval clock tower, you can try climbing the bell tower or campanile of the Cathedral, the bell tower of San Frediano Church, and the bell tower of Santa Reparata church, which is shown in this video. I've climbed all of them!

We handpicked these listings carefully, considering (wherever possible) Superhost status, recent guest reviews, location, accommodation type, prices, availability of dates, decor, and amenities. The image galleries get refreshed with the latest updates regularly. They were last updated on April 11, 2024.

Palazzo Mansi Palazzo Mansi Palazzo Mansi

Looking for a hidden gem to explore in Lucca? Visit Palazzo Mansi, less than 2 km (1.2 mi) from this hotel. This is a real museum residence and a remarkable example of a silk merchant’s house.

Between 1686 and 1691, Raffaello Mansi commissioned some renovation works to Luccan architect, Raffaello Mazzanti. Preexisting tower houses were connected, while the rooms on the first floor were decorated in sumptuous Baroque style and frescoed with allegorical representations alluding to the glory of the family. Further modernization works were carried out by Luigi Mansi in the 18th century.

The building was sold to the State in 1965 and became a National Museum in 1977. The State recovered some original furnishings, frescoes, and tapestries on the walls. Some rooms are very impressive, such as the Bridal Chamber with the original alcove and fabrics such as embroidered silk, or the rooms covered with tapestries. Some rooms display a collection of mainly 15th- and 16th-century paintings. Among them are the masterpieces of Luca Giordano, Domenico Beccafumi, Tintoretto, Bronzino, and Pontormo.

Today, it's also possible to see some silk clothes and drapery, examples of the excellence of Lucca in the Middle Ages.

Labyrinth at the Lucca Cathedral Cathedral of Lucca

If you plan on visiting the Cathedral of Lucca during your stay, make sure to check out the mysterious labyrinth there. To the right of the entrance to the cathedral, you can see a bas-relief with the labyrinth. Next to the labyrinth of Lucca, there's just a phrase that speaks of Theseus and his exit from the labyrinth of Daedalus, thanks to the thread of Ariadne.

In many medieval churches, labyrinths have been carved on the floor or at the entrance. The most famous is that of Chartres, and the oldest in Europe is located in the Basilica of San Vitale in Ravenna. Many labyrinths were destroyed in the 17th and 18th centuries because they were considered non-Christian symbols. A lot of these labyrinths refer to the story of Theseus and the Minotaur.

Why are these labyrinths created? We do not know precisely. They can be related to the Templar knights, marking the important places where there exists/existed an initiatory path. These can also be allegories of the search for knowledge and human pilgrimage.
