Frankfurt is a very businesslike city, its most characteristic traits being the skyscrapers, people dressed in suits with a suitcase in hand and always in a hurry, coffee shops all around, and very modern architecture. But in spite of all this business blend, you still can find places where you can escape from all the noise and rush of the city. Palmengarten is exactly one of them. This wonderful park, with its beautiful nature and peaceful atmosphere, is not only a refuge for people from the crowd and routine, but also a place where they can feel at ease and be closer to nature.

Escape into the world of nature

The history of this piece of paradise reckons 140 years, when the progressive residents of Frankfurt decided to bring a green oasis into their city. In the course of time it was developed and improved, the collection of plants has become richer and more diverse. Just one thing remained the same – its beauty and uniqueness.

If I was asked to give you a visual description of this park, I would tell you that it is a well-maintained park area of 20 hectares (49 acres), on the territory of which an utterly large number of various plant species grow. Even from the name of the park, you can understand that the palms play the main role here. And indeed this is the place where you can spot many types of palm trees, as the territory they cover is 9 hectares (22 acres). Apart from the palms, you can also visit the greenhouses, admire the colorful flower beds, and walk along the shore of a large, clean lake. The concept standing behind the design of this mesmerizing park implied creating a great place for spending time with your family and friends.

The Palmengarten visiting hours are from 9.00 AM to 6.00 PM from February to October, and from 9.00 AM to 4.00 PM from November to January. The admission fee for adults is 7 EUR (approximately 5.50 USD), and for children and adolescents (up to age 13) the price is only 2 EUR (approximately 1.5 USD).

Discover the tropical garden in the Palm House

If you enter from the Palmengarten street, the first thing you’ll discover is the Palm House. This 18 meters (59 feet) high glass house is the oldest construction in the park, and was built in 1869, then reconstructed in 1929. It is one of the largest constructions of its kind in Europe. Inside you will discover an impressive collection of subtropical palms, giant shrubs, tree ferns, and numerous tropical foliage plants. All these create the impression as if you’re lost in a tropical forest.

For your convenience, you can purchase an information booklet at the entrance of the park, which will tell you more about the history of the creation of Palmengarten, the map of the area, and will describe to you the origin of the different species of plants.

Be enchanted by the rare species of orchids in Palmengarten

One more outstanding thing in this park is the charming collection of orchids, which counts for more than 100 species. These graceful flowers of different colors, forms, and dimensions will enchant your eyes. You will also have the possibility to marvel at the rarest species of orchids.

Relaxation for the entire family

One of the greatest advantages when visiting Palmengarten, is that it offers a great range of activities for the entire family. For instance, if you come here with your children, there are playgrounds equipped with a rustic fairy castle, a climbing scaffold, sandboxes, slides, and table tennis. Meanwhile, parents can rest on the benches and tree logs that are placed around the playground so that they can easily look after their children.

There is also a music theater called Papageno which offers the year-round live program. Each season it presents to the public about 20 different plays: musical fairy tales and adventures especially for children, as well as a diverse evening program with opera, operetta, concerts, and musicals.
