Remembering a hero

Mangal Pandey was a revolutionary martyr during the British colonial era. He was the first soldier to revolt and attack the colonizers and as punishment, he was hanged on a tree nearby to where the present day park is located. To honor him, there is a monument at the center of the park with a statue and inscription dedicated to Mangal Pandey. The inscription briefly describes who Mangal Pandey was and what his contribution to the independence of India was. It also says how he was hanged for his actions. There is also a replica of a colonial-era canon on site, a reminder of how Mangal Pandey attacked the British officials during that time and paved the way for the rebellion to start.
