6. Zhonghua Road Night Market

Taichung is justifiably famous for its night market scene, and if you’re intrigued by the markets in this city then you owe it to yourself and Taichung to visit the one that started it all. Zhonghua Road is the location of the city’s first night market, which opened in the 1950s and to this day offers more than 500 stalls. It’s a fairly traditional market - offering the usual food stalls and grottos selling bargain products - and although other markets may offer greater innovation, this is still the place locals come for food at 3 am.

7. Zhongxiao Road Night Market

While other markets in the city offer food, clothing, arcades and more, Zhongxiao Road Night Market is clear about what it offers, and this market is one which specializes in dining options. And when we say “specializes”, we mean that this is the place to come, again and again, if you want to try something new and tasty. It doesn’t open until 4 pm, but once open, it will be crowded on both sides of the street with locals and tourists enjoying tastes as diverse as bamboo rice, sugarcane juice, and even oyster vermicelli. A foodie’s paradise!

As the name suggests, this market is aimed squarely at tourists, an offshoot of Fengjia Night Market which draws people looking for the most accessible attractions of Taiwanese culture. Like most of the markets, it’s particularly notable for its food options which include Takoyaki, a deep-fried taste explosion that will ensure you come back to this place more than once.

Miao Dong Night Market is close to Fuxing Road, the main shopping district for many of Taichung’s residents. Aim for Fengyuan Matsu Temple, and you’ll find plenty of shops as well as this food-centered market which is particularly famous for its delicious pineapple ice. Before you indulge your sweet tooth, you might want to try the Qingshui Pork Ribs Noodle Shop. The specialty from which it takes its name also includes deep fried garlic chips and minced pork broth. Another highly recommended dish that’s easy to find in the area is oyster omelet - which may sound strange to a Western palate, but comes highly recommended!
