If you are a foodie visiting Poland, you are most likely going to be looking for pierogies — delicious dumplings with various fillings. In Warsaw, you’ll find pierogies on the menu at most restaurants. But where can you go for a huge selection of authentic, delicious, and affordable pierogies? Read on to learn more about where to find some of the best pierogies at Zapiecek in Warsaw.

Zapiecek, a delicious pierogi restaurant with many locations

Zapiecek is a kitschy chain restaurant located in several locations, mostly in Warsaw’s old town. As a self-proclaimed foodie, I wouldn’t typically choose a restaurant with waitstaff dressed in traditional costumes and kitschy decorations everywhere, but the reviews of this restaurant urged me to push aside my initial reservations. I encourage you to do the same, as the cuisine served at Zapiecek is flavorful, fresh, and authentic. The pierogies were some of the best I’ve ever eaten.

There are seven Zapiecek outlets in Warsaw, with three of them conveniently located in Warsaw Old Town. You can also find Zapiecek at Nowy Swiat near Warsaw University and on Aleje Jerozolimskie near several important Jewish memorials.

Savory pierogies

Now moving on to what to eat! Filled with meats, cheeses, mushrooms, or vegetables, savory pierogies are a delicious option for lunch or dinner. All pierogies at Zapiecek are handmade and either fried on both sides or boiled. They are served on a metal or cast-iron pan, or on a porcelain platter decorated with traditional Polish designs. The Russian-style pierogies, pierogies with meat, or pierogies filled with spinach and different cheeses served with a warm cheese sauce are all delicious. A plate of nine pierogies costs approximately 22.99 PLN (~5.87 USD). To try several different types of pierogies, it is best to order different dishes to share among the people you’re with.

Sweet pierogies

Who knew that pierogies could be filled with fruit?! This takes the delicious pierogi to a whole new level in my books. Order a plate of sweet pierogies to finish off your meal. You can choose from pierogies stuffed with strawberries, blueberries, or a mixed portion of strawberry and blueberry-filled pierogies. Your pierogies will be accompanied with either a sweet cream, sour cream, or vanilla sauce. I’d suggest ordering the sweet cream as it isn’t too sweet, and really allows the flavors from the fruit to come through. Sweet pierogies cost 22.99 PLM (~5.87 USD) for 9 pierogies.

Sides and drinks

To accompany your hearty meal of pierogies, you may consider ordering a few delicious side dishes. If you are visiting Warsaw on a cold day, warm up with a mug of steaming hot beetroot soup — it warms you from the inside out (6.99 PLN / ~1.79 USD). Or, if you are visiting in the summer, order a bowl of Lithuanian-style cold beetroot soup, but don’t let the vivid pink color scare you — it is actually very delicious and refreshing (15.99 PLN / ~4.08 USD).

If you are visiting Zapiecek with a large group of people, which I think is the best way to experience all the different pierogies, you may want to order a jug of hot fruit compote (20.99 PLN / ~5.36 USD). Fruit compote (kompot z suszu) is a traditional Polish drink that is served hot or cold (I preferred the hot version) and is made from apples, pears, raisins, and dried plums. Spices, including cloves, cinnamon, are added to the drink and it is thought to play a role in reducing cholesterol and aiding digestion. There is no better drink to accompany a hearty meal of pierogies than a warm mug of fruit compote.

The best pierogies in Warsaw?

Are you hungry yet? If you are looking for somewhere to sample a variety of traditional pierogies, side dishes, and drinks in Warsaw, I’d highly recommend visiting Zapiecek. With convenient locations all around the city, Zapiecek is a great place to visit no matter where you are staying in Warsaw.
