La Maddalena went through several name changes – Ilva, Fussa, Bucina, Bicinara and Santa Maria Magdalena – before settling on its name today. While it has its role in history, La Maddalena is perhaps best known for Napoleon Bonaparte’s failed attempt to occupy the island in 1793.
Today, the northern Sardinia island is a tourist destination popular for its beautiful clear waters that shimmer with a turquoise hue. Given it is a summer destination, the ideal times to visit the island are between October and May. The shoulder months usually have emptier beaches, so if you’re looking to beat the crowds, those are the best times to go. Here’s a list of the best hotels and vacation rentals in La Maddalena!
We handpicked these listings carefully, considering (wherever possible) Superhost status, recent guest reviews, location, accommodation type, prices, availability of dates, decor, and amenities. The image galleries get refreshed with the latest updates regularly. They were last updated on January 22, 2025.

Getting around
While getting around is a cinch, given that the island has a circular bus service, other isolated beaches can only be reached by boat. Our tip? Hire your own private gommoni – rubber dinghies with motors – from the La Maddalena waterfront. Your skipper will take you wherever you want to go and can even recommend places you can check out.
