The Dominican Republic is located in the Caribbean and shares its island with Haiti. It has a long and rich colonial history, dating back a few centuries. The location of the island in the Caribbean made it an important trading spot, as well as a source of agriculture and sugar production. These days, one of the Dominican Republic’s main source of revenue is tourism.

There are tons of great hotels and beaches to check out that cater to any whim. And, since the Dominican Republic is so tourism focused, there is no shortage of amazing restaurants to check out while here. Puerto Plata is one of the most tourist-dense areas of the island and, as such, that’s where you’ll find some of the best restaurants. Check out this list for the top places to dine during your vacation in this tropical island paradise!

Quirky with some interesting decor, this place may look peculiar but it definitely serves some of the best Caribbean and Dominican inspired cuisine. Part of the restaurant is located outside, so going during lunch, while the sun is out, makes for a nice day excursion from your hotel. Their pina coladas are perfect during a hot afternoon and their stellar chicken soup makes for a perfect hearty nighttime meal. Book a table in advance because Le Papillon is quite popular.

Feeling a little homesick? Craving a juicy burger or some fries? Then look no further than Big Lee’s Beach Bar. In case you didn’t get it from the name, Big Lee’s is in fact located on the beach, so you can go swim off those carbs right afterward. Big Lee’s has live music on Friday nights and makes some amazing drinks.

Have a few cervezas and listen to some local island tunes. One of the best things about Big Lee’s is that Big Lee is, in fact, a real person, who personally will greet guests almost as soon as they step in the door.

Serving Caribbean favorites, as well as some vegetarian dishes, Los Tres Cocos serves some amazing grilled food, like steak and lamb chops. The fish is freshly caught daily and it’s so fresh the chef will show you the catch before he cuts it up and throws it on the grill. It’s a small and intimate location, perfect for bringing a date. Because of its popularity and the small size of the restaurant, waiting is inevitable. But in the words of one patron, “slow down, have another cerveza and don’t worry because you’ll be experiencing something special.”
