In 2008, I decided to turn my passion for this amazing city into a career by becoming a tour guide. Both my parents lived in East Germany: My dad became a teacher, until refusal to join the Communist party ended his career, whilst my mom worked as a tour gui... Read more

Plötzensee lake
Address: 13351 Berlin, Germany
Tip from tour guide
Within the 892 sq m (9601 sq ft) that is the land area of the city-state of Berlin, there are some 35 lakes. The number might even be as high as 70, depending on how broad or narrow is one's definition of a lake. Many Berliners have a home lake and a favorite lake. Sometimes, the two are the same. My home lake is Plötzensee.
With a circumventing footpath of 2 km (1.2 mi), most of which is gravel, 'my' lake is a perfect place for those nice 4-6 km (2.4-3.7 mi) runs; especially when I don't feel like stopping at traffic lights or sharing the air with motor vehicles.

Tip from tour guide
Stop by Alexander von Humboldt's memoral at Humboldthain Park. He was the ultimate multidisciplinary scientist, combining ways of thinking while developing new methods of research and exploration. However, his greatest contribution is probably that he popularized science, making it available to all in Berlin in the early 19th century. Sometimes, when I train at Humboldthain, I like to be a bit silly and give Alexander von Humboldt a little Vulcan salute. Humboldt endured a lot of fitness challenges in his life but never gave up. Truly inspiring!
