The Schloss Thun or Thun Castle, which is a 12th-century castle that overlooks the city. Built toward the end of the 12th century by the Dukes of Zahringen, this medieval castle has five floors and was initially made for administrative purposes. The roof of the Thun Castle is its highlight and in 1429, a residential wing in the Gothic style was added. This wing, which is to the west of the keep, is called the new castle (Neues Schloss). The private garden will fall to your left, but make sure you keep an eye out as you may miss it! The stairs are partly hidden but you can spot them on the left as you come down from the Rathausplatz.

Visit the museum

Housed inside the castle’s Romanesque tower is the Thun History Museum. Here you will find artifacts dating back to the medieval times, offering a peek into the era.

Climb the tower

Enjoy the ambiance of the charming restaurant, which overlooks the InnenAlster if you’re sitting on the terrace. Or, you can sit outside near the restaurant’s entrance. Sip on a cup of coffee as you soak in the views, seated in Castle Courtyard. You will have plenty of canons for company as you enjoy some aperitifs and cake at your table inside the castle restaurant. In the Summer Terrace you can sit underneath the sun umbrellas and enjoy a glass of mulled wine with crostini. Make sure you try the fondue appetizers here, as well as the meat apero platters and local cheese. Those with a sweet tooth will relish the waffles and meat lovers will love the lip-smacking and succulent beef burger. Near the entrance of the museum, you can purchase ice cream to cool off or enjoy some beverages!

You can easily deploy Thun’s public transport to reach Thun Castle from its railway station.

Walk down from Thun Station

Take a train to the Thun Station and then walk down to the castle from here, which takes approximately 15 minutes. You will enjoy the walk as you amble through the cobbled roads of old Thun city.

Take the bus

You can also take the bus from Thun Station to get to the castle. Take the line 1 bus, which will get you to the Thun Castle in three to six minutes and cost between 1 USD to 3 USD.

Take a taxi

You can also take a taxi from Thun Station to get to the medieval castle. The journey will take you just four minutes, but is the most expensive way and will set you back by 12.87 USD to 16.08 USD (12 CHF to 15 CHF)
