Kaohsiung is the largest municipality (by area) in Taiwan and it is the second-most populous city after Taipei. It is also known as the port capital of the island due to its many strategic trading and fishing ports.

In recent years, thanks to more up-and-coming attractions such as the Pier 2 Art Centre, Kaohsiung has seen a slight boon in its tourism sector. As such, more hotels and accommodation options are springing up in Kaohsiung to house the increasing number of visitors to its shores, providing competitive prices and making life a lot easier for travellers.

That being said, travellers will always look out for the best combinations of price and comfort when it comes to accommodation and the Shichi (pronounced shh qi) Hotel in Kaohsiung provides just that.

Lovely room concept and decoration

First off, Shichi Hotel is not exactly what you would call a grand hotel with an impressive number of rooms. It has 5 floors with about 4 - 5 rooms on each floor. The rooms are all decorated according to a specific theme of the floor they are on and you will notice it the moment you open your room door. The walls are painted and decorated to make you feel as though you’re not quite in the same building as the lobby you just came from.

Each room comes with a comfy linen bed, an ensuite bathroom, a mounted flat-screen television and a mini bar. Wireless network access is available in your room and each floor has its own router, so the connection is relatively stable. The rooms are also sound-proof to ensure that guests can rest without any noise.

A standard single room with a double bed roughly costs about 2,000 TWD (61.41 USD) per night. Of course, if you wish to stay in more luxurious rooms, the price would naturally be much more expensive as a family suite which sleeps 4 would cost close to 6,400 TWD (196.51 USD). All these prices are inclusive of breakfast.

A delicious breakfast set and in-house restaurant

Breakfast is served to guests in the in-house restaurant located at the lobby. Although it is not a buffet spread typical of hotels, breakfast at Shichi Hotel has guests choosing from a menu of premium sandwiches, burgers and omelettes. The meal comes with fresh cream soup and coffee or tea.

Apart from breakfast, the restaurant also serves up a variety of local and foreign cuisine. Due to some slight remodelling work, the restaurant’s seating capacity has somewhat decreased and you may find yourself being served your meal in the lobby or at the hotel bar, which even by itself, is a relatively comfortable place to dig in at.

If you’re looking for some local dessert after your meal, the hotel is also right next to a traditional candy shop selling some Taiwanese sweets and treats, although there aren’t any special rates for guests of the hotel.

A few minutes' walk from Ruifeng Night Market and Arena MRT

As is the case with any accommodation option a traveller might look into, location is key. And Shichi Hotel’s location on Yucheng Road is just near perfect. The Kaohsiung Arena MRT station is just a 3 minute walk from the hotel around the corner and from there, one can hop on the city’s underground transit to Zuoying High Speed Rail Station, Zuoying Train Station, Kaohsiung Airport, the Pier 2 Art Centre and most other top locations throughout the city.

You can even use the station to get across the street to Hanshin Arena Shopping centre, one of Kaohsiung’s newest shopping malls and one of the city’s top shopping destinations with over 10 stories of luxury brands, restaurants and other items.

But perhaps most importantly, Shichi Hotel is located a mere 10 minutes (might be less if you’re a fast walker) from Ruifeng Night Market, one of Kaohsiung’s busiest night market frequented by locals. Although the Liouhe Tourist Night Market is also an easy MRT ride away from the hotel, for the best street food and experience, one should prioritise Ruifeng Night Market.

It sells many local delicacies and international snacks such as crispy German pork knuckle, Korean grilled chicken thighs and much more. A word of warning however, if you choose to visit the night market on a weekend, be prepared to be squished and pushed around as it will almost certainly be full of both tourists and locals. You could find that after an hour, you’ve only managed to make your way through half of the street market.

A great choice in Kaohsiung

Of course, with a little prodding about, you can most likely find hotels which are generally even cheaper than Shichi Hotel. However, given its excellent location, unique theme, comfortable facilities and reasonable pricing, it certainly is a great choice for those who wish to experience Kaohsiung and have a relaxing time doing it without breaking the bank over accommodation.
