6. Westgate Plaza
Westgate Plaza has a colorful history. It was established by the family of Guiseppi Nigro and named it as such because it was the gateway to the West. Since its establishment, Westgate Plaza was on the leading edge. Considered as the first strip mall to open in Albany in 1957, the Westgate Mall in Central Avenue has 25 stores including banks, diners, shoes, and apparel shops. The mall had some redevelopments in the 1990s and the signature Westgate Plaza logo was unofficially considered a landmark for downtown Central Avenue.
