If you’re looking for a wonderful alternative to a hotel in Mombasa, then look no further as the Tamarind Village welcomes you with open arms. It is a multi-functional complex that consists of fully serviced apartments and so much more, which I share with you in this review. All apartments within Tamarind Village are privately owned so each one has its own unique identity, reflecting the style of the owner. This means that each stay that you have at Tamarind Village will certainly be different. The Tamarind Group manages and services the apartments on behalf of the owners. Located at Cement Silo Road, Nyali, PO Box 95805, Mombasa, Tamarind Village is one of the oldest and most well-known, “home-away-from-home” places in East Africa and is perfectly positioned in close proximity to the airport and the centre of Mombasa.

An enchanting entrance to your apartment

Imagine entering your key into the lock and finding the sight that you see in this photograph? I bet you’re intrigued to find out more. The architecture of Tamarind Village is that of a quirky colonial-style space with towering white walls that form a fortress with individual apartments. Guests can choose to have either a one, two or three-bedroom apartment and trust me when I say, these apartments are absolutely enormous and their interior is so creatively designed. The full of greenery and lush entrance that you see in the photograph is for a rather enchanting and endearing one bedroom apartment and is a great introduction to your own private space. This type of entrance will immediately make you feel like you are in an idyllic haven. From the moment you step into your private space, you will see how stylish and charming the area that you will be calling home is and it will confirm to you that you made the right decision in choosing Tamarind Village.

Exquisite and unique interior

With each apartment being individually designed and furnished, your experience at the Tamarind Village will be much more intimate than that of a standard hotel and I am sure that you will appreciate the quirky little details in the apartments, whether it be in the foyer or the veranda. As you can see from the photograph, the décor within this one bedroom apartment is aesthetically pleasing, unusual and quirky in the best of ways. The apartments within Tamarind Village have their own spacious living room with a television, dining room, fully functioning kitchen and bedroom(s). This place is perfect for families that want a peaceful holiday that is away from the tourist flocks as well as for business travellers who require a modern and functional area in which to conduct their work and host conferences. If you’re an expat in Mombasa and you need somewhere to stay for a while before you settle down, then this is definitely the place to be.

Elegant and authentic bedrooms

As you can see from this photograph, the style of this bedroom, which is within a two bedroom apartment, is significantly different to the one bedroom apartment that I have shared with you above and this is what makes Tamarind Village stand-out. Each apartment is so very different and unique in its own way. This is what makes Tamarind Village so brilliant and surprising because you can never really know what to expect, with the exception of knowing you will have a brilliant time. The bedroom in this apartment is exquisitely furnished with rustic yet elegant and authentic ornaments scattered around. The rest of the apartment is full of wood carvings in the Swahili style and has lovely decor. The design is so thoughtful and tasteful and really does create a peaceful first class apartment that is recommended.

Spacious private veranda with a picturesque view

A number of the apartments have a private veranda, which can be accessed from the living room and/or bedroom. The balconies create a luxurious oasis where you can enjoy the views of the breathtaking Indian Ocean and the famous UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Mombasa Old Town. The pretty interior of the apartments is also translated into the veranda, which is kitted out with an abundance of tables and chairs for your comfort and leisure. If you’re on holiday with your family, then it’s a wonderful place to sit and have a meal. Alternatively, if you’re travelling for business, then this is a great spot in which to do some work in the early morning or evening when the cool breeze is coming your way. I especially found that the sights and sounds of Mombasa were so very evocative from the balcony. It was wonderful being able to hear gently in the background the business of the city and the Old Town yet be away from it.

Fantastic facilities available for your enjoyment

The Tamarind Village has two swimming pools with a hot tub, a fitness centre, a therapy room, a squash court, conference facilities and a casino. One of the two swimming pools, as featured in the photograph, overlooks the Indian Ocean and is a fantastic place in which to lounge around for a few hours. The pool area is surrounded by gorgeous palm trees; you can sit under the shade and gaze at the ocean and the harbour of dhows that are sailing by. You may even spot a number of local children swimming across the water and playing football by running up and down the beaches on the other side of the creek. It should be noted that there is no beach on the side the Tamarind Village is located. There is free Wi-Fi available throughout the whole Tamarind Village. There is also free private parking on site.

Feast your eyes on the Tamarind Restaurant and Dhow

Whilst all apartments have their own fully functioning kitchen, you may wish to have a break from cooking and can opt to order room service or dine at the Harbour Restaurant, which is located poolside. Alternatively, if you want to treat yourself, then the Tamarind Restaurant and Tamarind Dhow are definitely recommended. The Tamarind Restaurant is a very popular upmarket dining establishment and is one of the best places to eat in Mombasa. When it comes to food, ambiance and service, this place has a history of delivering on point every time. The Tamarind Dhow is also one of the most well-known excursions in Mombasa and will give you the chance to sail around the island, eat exceptional food and enjoy live music.

If you are interested in the Tamarind Restaurant and/or the Tamarind Dhow, I would recommend that you book in advance. It should be noted that you do not need to stay in the Tamarind Village to enjoy the Tamarind Restaurant and the Tamarind Dhow. However, if I am honest, I would urge you to consider staying in the Tamarind Village.

Exclusive area to rest and recharge

The apartments are gorgeous, the grounds are beautifully kept and the staff are very professional and friendly. By being away from the tourist beaches on the north and south coast of Mombasa, Tamarind Village retains a sense of exclusivity and whilst you’re there, you will feel like time has stopped and the rhythm of life is placid and relaxing, which will allow you to truly rest and recharge. The prices per night to stay in one of the apartments varies contingent on when you wish to visit, so you are advised to get in touch with the Tamarind Group and make enquires about this magical place. It’s worth visiting and staying in, even if only for a night. For example, you may consider enjoying dinner on the Tamarind Dhow and staying one night in the unusual, stylish and comfortable Tamarind Village.
