Kenya is primarily known for its amazing safari experiences, but did you know that the hotels and beaches on the coast are equally as good as visiting game parks? Well, the hotels on the south coast of Mombasa, Kenya are actually the perfect place for you to relax and rejuvenate your soul and there is one hotel that offers a spa (to both guests and non-guests) that deserves a special mention. That hotel and spa is the Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort & Spa which is home to the Tulia Spa.

The Tulia Spa feeds your soul with the pampering that it truly deserves, especially if you’re visiting after a high adrenaline and fast paced safari experience. The name, “Tulia” itself is the word for “relax” in Swahili and the spa is certainly the place to be if you want to totally unwind and enjoy some absolutely wonderful treatments. The spa is located centrally within Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort & Spa, which is based at Malindi Road, Mombasa, Kenya.

Sit in a banda that overlooks the beach and the waterfront

The Tulia Spa captures the serenity and lushness of Kenya’s nature due to its architectural structure and location. Within Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort & Spa, the Tulia Spa is in the “quiet zone” of the resort meaning that it will deliver privacy and relaxation to the maximum. The spa consists of a set of bandas, indoor massage rooms, an outdoor hot tub and reflexology pool.

The bandas are surrounded by clean-cut grass and overlook the beach and the waterfront. They are so very evocative of this African continent that they make you feel, even during your spa experience, that you’re connecting with the history and culture of Africa. The bandas are square in shape and consist of thatched roofs and create a little tropical hideaway for you or your group that are enjoying the treatments. The interior of the bandas (as shown in the photograph below) are clean and inviting and will make you feel like you’re definitely ready to start glowing with the treatments on offer.

Whilst you’re inside the bandas, you will hear the beautiful birds through the roofs as well as the trickling of the water outside in the pools; the breeze from the Indian Ocean is, of course, another bonus and all adds to creating a tranquil and calming environment. You also get to enjoy the warmth of the heat albeit with some much-needed shade, meaning that you can enjoy yourself in comfort and style.

Try the Kahawa Scrub, made from finely ground Kenyan coffee

The interiors of the bandas are gorgeous and are of impeccable hygiene standards. Bright orange and green fluffy towels are in an abundance for your lavishing experience. The type of treatments on offer include Ayurvedic, Western and Oriental, so surely one type will appeal to you. Each treatment is a dreamy delight that encapsulates relaxation to the maximum and will immerse all of your senses in a feeling of relaxation and wellbeing.

If you want to splash out and sample a number of treatments, I would recommend booking the “Tulia Beauty Treatment” which lasts 2 hours and is a manicure, pedicure and facial experience for 11,000 KSH (107 USD). A less expensive alternative is the “Tulia Revitaliser”, which is only 1 hour and costs 7,000 KSH (68 USD) and includes a mini facial combined with back, feet and hand massage. Both of these options will definitely revive your senses, rejuvenate your body and soothe your soul. Rather than having a package, you can also opt for a single treatment that appeals the most to you. For example, Tulia Spa offers a 30 minute mini facial for 4,200 KSH (41 USD), a 45-minute deluxe manicure for 2,700 KSH (26 USD) and a 1-hour deluxe pedicure for 3,500 KSH (34 USD).

If you’re feeling more like you want a full body scrub rather than a beauty treatment or massage then the “Kahawa Scrub” for 1 hour, costing 5,400 KSH (52 USD) is the perfect option for you and it’s a real African treat that I have to recommend! The actual scrub is made from finely ground Kenyan coffee and is a really rich aromatic scrub that will smooth your skin and elevate your mood. Your skin will emerge as radiant as the sunshine creeping through the banda.

Lounge in the hot tub and reflexology pool

Now if you’re feeling like you want a combination of a scrub and a massage, then Tulia Spa can offer you the “Beach Retreat” experience, which includes three sea-inspired treatments to refresh, detox and pamper you for 2 hours. This experience includes a seaweed scrub, followed by a wonderful body massage and a dead sea products facial and costs 14,500 KSH (141 USD). The scrub experiences are designed to breathe new life into your body and the massage experiences create a decedent pamper experience for you to enjoy.

If you are with your partner and want a package where you can both enjoy treatments together then Tulia Spa has created “Couple’s Time”, which offers you and your partner a coconut cinnamon body scrub followed by a heady aromatherapy massage with sensual oils. This treatment lasts for 1 hour and 30 minutes and costs 15,500 KSH (151 USD). This package really does create a blissful experience and leaves you feeling centred, grounded and energised to continue enjoying your holiday with your loved one.

After your treatments, you can utilise the on-site showering facilities, which are really nice and within a circular and fully enclosed banda. In addition, you can use the outdoor hot tub and reflexology pool, which are recommended. This is because water along with human touch is at the heart of the best spa experiences. Water allows you to cleanse and purify your skin and I would encourage you to lounge around in the relaxation area by bathing in the outdoor hot tub and reflexology pool whilst looking up at the beautiful clear blue and not a cloud in sight African sky.

Enhance your wellbeing and install peace of mind

The Tulia Spa is genuinely a quiet sanctuary within gorgeous surroundings and is designed for pure relaxation. It offers energising treatments that create and enhance wellbeing and instil peace of mind. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime wellness haven that will make you have an unforgettable holiday if you visit it during your trip. With everyday life being so fast paced, you need time for you and the Tulia Spa is a retreat where calm and order can be restored within you, bringing the natural balance back into your life. Your soul will feel positive and relaxed once you visit this spa; the entire experience is uplifting and I am sure you will have no regrets in spending your time in this peaceful corner of Mombasa. In my humble opinion, the Tulia Spa has to be one of the best spa’s that I have ever experienced in the world.
