Meguro Gajoen opened in 1928 as the first wedding hall in Japan. The beauty and elegance of the former era are still vivid even today. I will now introduce this hall with its splendid staircase, beautiful portraits hanging everywhere even in the toilets and the lavish interior which uses plenty of mother-of-pearl as a decoration.

The gorgeous courtesan’s hallway

The first thing you see after entering is the so called Courtesan’s hallway. Various daily scenes from Tokyo’s Nihonbashi to Kyoto’s Kamogawa have been carved in wood and colored with distemper paint. Each different picture is impressive and somewhat coquettish. In this wonderful hallway you’ll forget that you’re in a hotel’s wedding hall.

An entrance to the folklore castle of the dragon god of the sea

Soon you’ll reach an entrance which looks almost like the one leading to the folklore castle of the sea dragon good. This is where the hotel’s lobby and restaurant are situated. The wedding hall is there too so everything is made to look like a world of dreams starts from here on. The decorations and plants in the corridor change according to the season. In autumn there are autumn colored trees which are even illuminated.

The toilets are so great that you’ll want to take a photo of them!

Everything around is gorgeous, but the toilets will surely surprise you. They look like posh toilets in a restaurant or a club’s lounge. Initially, you might not even guess where the small corridor leads to, as the walls are lavishly decorated with paintings and lacquered mother-of-pearl. You’ll definitely want to take a photo of all this beauty. Inside there’s even a vermillion arched bridge!

Even the toilet cabins are splendid inside

In the first years of Showa period the toilets used to be even more luxurious, but what has remained is pretty gorgeous too. The ceiling is decorated with fan-shaped paintings of birds, flowers and women, while the walls of the toilet cabins are covered in lacquered mother-of-pearl. Have you ever seen such toilets in your life? Actually they’re so popular that there’s a queue any time. Be sure to line up early enough.

The top-class giant staircase

the top-class giant staircase

There’s a waterfall in front of Restaurant Pandora which will make you forget about your daily worries. You walk around and even behind this lush green natural spot and absorb the blessings of the nature.

Another popular spot at Meguro Gajoen is the unique wooden building of the former Hall 3 which was designed as a municipal tangible cultural treasure in March 2009. In the past this was a place to hold banquets and a total of 7 rooms are connected with a long 99-step staircase. Every room is lavishly decorated with traditional paintings and beautiful furniture.

Particularly gorgeous is the Fish Reef Room. Everything is covered in golden leaf and gold paint – from the paintings on the ceiling and the transom down to the alcove post which is made of a 300-year old Japanese cypress tree. It looks dark and feels like someone might jump out of it any moment. Unfortunately taking photos is not allowed.

If you want to see the giant staircase you can join a tour or a dinner, but there are also smaller events held there, like exhibitions of flowers, calligraphy or Japanese dolls. Just a ticket to these events will allow you to enter inside and see the interior.

Meguro Gajoen – a magical space

Meguro Gajoen is a rare to find luxurious hotel full of art and architecture that embodies the true spirit of Japan’s aesthetics and historical traditions. You can stay here overnight or just eat at the restaurant and take a walk inside. You’ll be fascinated by this gorgeous magical space in the center of Tokyo.
