Balatonfüred in Hungary is a beautiful little resort town with a population of just 13,000. Its main attraction is that it sits on the northern shore of beautiful Lake Balaton, making it popular for yachting, watersports, and fishing. Only 129 kilometers (80 miles) from Budapest, this picturesque little town is a must-do on any trip to the country. It’s a perfect location to relax and unwind, whilst exploring the town and its surroundings. With two marinas, natural water springs, listed buildings from the 18th and 19th century, there are plenty of things to do in Balatonfured, Hungary for a traveler looking to relax and explore.

Balatonfured is a beautiful town, a relaxed and peaceful place full of history and culture. One of the best ways to see the town is to take a gentle walk. The sights include Gyógy tér, a leafy town square with the Kossuth Pump House natural spring. Join the locals to fill your water bottles with the slightly acidic, slightly yellow, but drinkable and prized water. Balaton Pantheon has a series of memorial plaques from those who took the cure in Balatonfured’s famous hospital.

2. Tagore Sétány: A perfect way to promenade with the townsfolk

The leafy promenade Tagore is a favorite meeting place for the locals, and you’ll enjoy a relaxing stroll through the leafy lakeside promenade at all times of day or night. There are plentiful eateries and cafes along the promenade to rest your legs and indulge in some people watching. On your walk, you’ll see a number of sculptures and statues, including a bust of Nobel Prize-winning poet Rabindranath Tagore, a memorial to drowned sailors of a hand reaching out of the water, and statues of a fisherman and boater standing guard proudly over the harbor entrance.

3. Jókai Memorial Museum

The Jókai Memorial Museum is located in the beautiful building that was the summer villa of the prolific Hungarian writer Mór Jókai. The museum is packed with historical memorabilia, furniture of the time, and acts as an insight into the writer’s life. There are also botanical and mineral collections to view. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday. For non-Hungarian speakers, there is an English guide available.

4. Vaszary Gallery

The Vaszary Gallery is one of Balatonfured’s art gallery and exhibition spaces. Established in 2010, it features a selection of art by painter János Vaszary and other notable artists including Auguste Rodin, Joan Miró, Ilona Keserü, Károly Hemzo. The gallery holds regular events, talks and concerts. You can enjoy a meal and drink in the cafe and have a relaxed walk in the extensive gardens.

5. Kisfaludy Gallery and Theatre

Another impressive art gallery to enjoy in Balatonfured is the contemporary Kisfaludy Gallery, opened in 2006. This gallery hosts an impressive number of contemporary works from new artists including paintings, sculptures, and photography. Kisfaludy Theater continues a long tradition of theatre in Balatonfured, all part of the bath culture of the town. Kisfaludy Theatre has its origins as far back as the 17th century when Sándor Kisfaludy opened the Füredi Theater Institute. This latest Kisfaludy Theatre opened in 2012 and offers a varied theatrical program throughout the year.

6. Vitorlázeum Sailing Museum

With Balaton lake an integral part of your Balatonfured visit, you will find yourself spending a lot of time at the lakeside. Whether it’s relaxing and people watching or actually getting out on the lake yourself, it’s always going to be a big part of your trip. But while you are lakeside, don’t miss the Victorlazeum, a fascinating interactive exhibit on the history of sailing. Housed in one of the most beautiful buildings in Balatonfured, this exhibition features a look at the past history of sailing and Lake Balaton.

7. Anna Ball: Balatonfured's annual glamorous spectacular!

If you’re in Balatonfured in July, you should definitely make the annual Anna Ball part of your trip. It’s been a major Hungarian event since 1825, taking place at the spectacular Anna Grand Hotel. You can buy tickets for the ball itself, but if you just want to experience the event, you can join the crowds to watch the ball guests attend in their gorgeous dresses. The town makes the ball a week-long event, with concerts and special events, including a parade for the ball queen around Balatonfured the day after the ball.

8. Annagora Aquapark

For a little aqua fun, head to the Annagora waterpark, where you’ll find 15 great water slides including three for children. There are heated outdoor and indoor pools, a big wave pool, smaller child’s wave pool, and for those looking to relax whilst the rest of the family play, there are spas, saunas, steam cabins and ice caves. And all of this just 500 meters (1,650 feet) from the beach with beautiful panoramic views of Lake Balaton. The park opens from June each year.

9. Kalandpart: High ropes adventure park

If you fancy a little adrenaline injected into your relaxing Balatonfured holiday, then Kalandpart is the place for you. The park offers a challenging high ropes course, slide on cable-car rails, try the 15-meter (50-foot) high climbing tree, walk the stunning hiking paths, and play at building the highest crate tower in the park. More relaxed activities include the hiking paths in stunning scenery, billiards, soccer, ping pong, and trampolines for the kids. There are also kayaks for hire on the park’s family-friendly beach.

10. Lóczy Cave

There are many incredible cave structures around Balatonfured, mostly included in the Bakony-Balaton Geopark. One of the best and most accessible is Loczy Cave, first discovered in 1882 and opened to the public in 1934. Featuring spectacular mid-Triassic limestone structures, the Loczy Cave tour is a wonderful way to see and understand this wonder of nature. The 30-minute tour is conducted with a knowledgeable professional guide, with a maximum of 25 people in the cave structure at a time.
