Travel about 16 km (10 miles) west of Lansing in Michigan and you’ll land yourself in Grand Ledge, situated along the banks of the Grand River and about half a billion-year-old sandstone ledges, which have given the city its name. 1. Go fishing at Jaycee Park

Sprawled across 2.5ha (6 acres) approximately, Jaycee Park is easily one of Grand Ledge’s best parks. It is just about a five-minute walk from the city’s downtown and bordering the Grand River, it makes for a fabulous place for you to stroll around and for the kids to have a fun time on the playground. However, what the park is most famous for is fantastic access to the river that it provides, attracting hordes of fishing enthusiasts to cast their line. Suckers, Carp, Northern Pike, Bullhead, Rock Bass, and Smallmouth Bass are only a few of the many species of fish you’ll find here. So, get that tackle box and fishing rod ready, folks. It’s fishing time!

2. Trek along Lincoln Brick Park's many hiking trails
Another one of Grand Ledge’s great city-owned parks is Lincoln Brick Park, home to about 5km (3 miles) of beautiful hiking trails. However, don’t be mistaken about the trail distance being short. Within this short stretch are several different kinds of natural habitats that you can hike through and explore. Just go in for any one of the park’s nine trails and you’ll be good. Although, the best hiking route is touted to be a combination of the Deer Run, Beechnut, Cherry Ridge, and Tallman trails. Taking the whole experience a notch higher is a fabulous panoramic view of the river frontage, all of which you can marvel at up close and personal. If you’re there in winter and there’s a sufficient amount of snow, you can even go in for some snowshoeing!

3. Head to the Fitzgerald Park for hiking
If not Lincoln Brick Park, you can also head to Fitzgerald Park, lush, luxuriant, and lovely in all its aspects. A popular venue for having picnics, the park has about 5km (3 miles) of nature trails that are a hidden gem. Among the most famous hiking trails that can be easily accessed from the park is the Ledges Trail. Head along the trail route and you’ll find yourself marveling at towering sandstone cliffs of the Sandstone Creek on one side and a stunning vista of the Grand River on the other. While the trails bring some of the most beautiful sights your way all through the year, the experience is elevated during the Fall season when the greenery is flashing multi-colored hues. Keep your cameras ready while heading there, you’ll get plenty of Instagram-worthy shots!

4. Do some rock climbing at the Oak Park
Oak Park is probably one of the only few spots in the entire state where you can get your blood pumping, doing some rock climbing. Featuring a 5 to 10m (20 to 30ft) high towering cliff that borders the Grand River, the park sees many thousands of locals and tourists heading there to have some fun. There are close to 100 challenging as well as easy climbing routes that you can go in for, depending on your level of expertise. However, do note that you’ll have to carry your own climbing equipment and pitch the top rope anchor by yourself. If this gets you worried, there are professional guides who you can hitch for lessons or guided climbing.

5. Soak in the scenic views at Island Park
Attracting thousands towards the stunning views it offers is Island Park, sitting in the midst of the Grand River like an island. While the park’s landscape is quite a sight to behold, the supremely scenic views of Grand Ledge’s natural landscape that it offers, bring it onto this list of things to do in Grand Ledge, Michigan. Located right across from the Opera House in the 1885 Fire Hall on Bridge Street, the place is spread across two floors that have a superb range of things that you can marvel at as well as purchase. There’s fabric art, crafted baskets, artisanal products, pottery, handmade jewelry, vintage apparel, and what not! Their collection changes seasonally, so regardless of the time of year that you choose to visit, it’s going to be a great experience.
