The quiet beach resort town of Hua Hin in Thailand is pulsating with life and a plethora of activities, beckoning travellers to explore its soul. An offbeat destination, Hua Hin in Thailand is the perfect getaway for both couples and the solo traveller looking for some soul food amid the hustle and bustle of daily life. Hua Hin’s proximity to the Thai capital Bangkok (198.8 km or 61.4 miles) makes it an easy commute. Travellers can take a bus, a minibus, book a private car or even a train. Taking the bus is quite convenient and you reach the beach resort town in 3 hours. The journey will set you back by THB 260 (USD 8). Taking the minibus is a tad cheaper and costs THB 205 (USD 6.3) and gets you to Hua Hin in 3.5 hours. However, the minibuses are usually crowded and accommodating your luggage could be a challenge. Moreover, the driver will often charge extra for the luggage.

You can enjoy the scenery as you drive down from Bangkok to Hua Hin. The billowing palm trees, the sun-kissed beaches and the quiet breeze cast a spell. Once in the beach resort town, you have multiple activities you can choose from. Travellers are often under the misconception that Hua Hin is a laid-back town, with little to offer tourists. You’d be surprised at the plethora of night activities that nestle within some pockets of this quiet-little town. Here are the top five things to do in Hua Hin at night.

1. Explore the Hua Hin Night Market

To get a feel of the idyllic town and soak in all the sights and sounds, walk around the Hua Hin Night Market. Who knows what surprises it might throw your way! The Hua Hin Night Market is popular with tourists and locals alike. It is located near Dechanuchit Road and Petchkasem Road – the intersection. It starts at 5 pm and wraps up by midnight. One of the best landmarks to get to the market is The Clock Tower, from where it is a five-minute walk. You can also grab a cuppa from the Starbucks which is near The Clock Tower and walk towards the market.

Walking into the market you feel like Alice who has slipped down the rabbit hole into Wonderland. There is a bevvy of stalls lining the streets, little sentinels beckoning you. The fairy-lights impart a golden hue and the smell of seafood assails the senses. The little wooden carts selling grilled fish, mini pancakes and sticky rice call out to the weary traveller. The handicrafts stalls line one section of the street and occasionally, you’ll hear someone play the barrel-shaped Taphon, a stringed instrument synonymous with the Thai culture.

5. Enjoy a slice of history at the Hua Hin Train Station

This historical landmark is an amalgamation of eastern and western architectural sensibilities. The original Hua Hin Train Station dates back to 1910 and is one of the oldest in Thailand. It was built during the time of King Rama VI in the Hua Hin sub-district and is on the southern line. However, in 1926, Prince Purachatra Jayakara rebuilt the railway station as we see it today.

The Victorian architecture of the Hua Hin Train Station drifts you to another era as you explore the Royal Waiting Room. You can also see influences of Thai architecture as you time travel to the past. While it opens at 7 AM (and closes at 11 PM), exploring the railway station as dusk sets in is recommended. The pagoda-style building with its red wooden roof and lemon walls is a picture-perfect location. At night, when the star-spangled sky twinkles over the Hua Hin Railway Station, you can almost hear the whispers from the past!
