Mendocino may be a small village in Northern California but it has plenty to do, in many cases more than a town would. We scoured our maps and have selected the best things to do in Mendocino during your stay. Book a stay in any of the amazing bed and breakfasts and top accommodations in the area. So whilst you wander along the breathtakingly rugged coastal cliffs you can contemplate what you’re going to do the next day with our easy list.

1. Walk the Mendocino Coast

The Mendocino coast is known for its picturesque and awe inspiring landscapes from the jagged cliff edges to the rolling sand dunes. Taking a stroll along the coast is the perfect way to while away a few hours on a sunny afternoon. There are lots of starting points and routes that take in consideration different walking abilities and timescales, be sure to check the map to see which route would best suit you.

2. Visit Point Cabrillo Light Station State Historic Park

The state historic park is home to the 1909 Light Station, and an additional 270 acres (109 hectares) of undeveloped coastal areas, that is a whole lot of exploring to do! Whilst you are there be sure to check out the small beach area called Frolic Cave, there is also spot where you can see a shipwreck. To get there follow the North Trail where a step path will take you down to the beach, but be sure to wear hiking boots.

3. See the waterfall at Russian Gulch State Park

Another walking activity, are you sensing a pattern to the activities to do in Mendocino? This one is a fantastic 6.5 mile (10 kilometer) loop that take you around the Russian Gulch State Park. This moderate walk also takes in a beautiful fresh 36 foot (11 meter) waterfall, a sunken sea cave and the photogenic Frederick W. Panhorst Bridge. The Mendocino point of interest is not a tourist trap so be sure that you are prepared: take the right clothes and follow the trail map.

4. Spend some time in Ford House Museum

5. Tackle the Eco Staircase Walk at Jughandle State Reserve

This is one for true adventurers, just look at the pictures and get excited about exploring this magnificent coastal land. Jughandle State Reserve’s 5 mile (8 kilometers) Ecological Staircase Walk takes in three wave-cut terraces and a wide range of inspiring scenic views. From Jughandle State Reserve you can really see the land change from over time, we’d be happy to do the walk a few times over! There are also shorter, and longer walks depending on your level of comfortability. If you’re looking for things to do near Mendocino, check this place out.

6. Brush up on your history at the Kelley House Museum

Started in 1973 the Kelley House Museum aims to “collect, preserve, protect and share the rich history of the Mendocino Coast”. So far, they’ve done a fantastic job with thousands of artifacts, photographs and documents available to view. They also host events and activities throughout the year so be sure to check if there is anything exciting happening when you plan to attend.

This Mendocino tourist attraction is historic and plays host to the Highlight Gallery, which is set within the views of Mendocino Bay. The three storey building is filled with artworks all handmade in the USA, from wood furniture, sculptures, and paintings. Since its creation in 1978 the gallery has grown and grown, now it is one of the largest and oldest collections in the Pacific North West. They regularly host art shows, with all details being available online.

8. Relax in the Temple of Kwan Tai

The Temple of Kwan Tai is a 19th century house dedicated to the Taoist god of war, not what you would expect to find in Mendocino. Four generations of protectors and carers have looked after this temple and its bright colours stand proud against the Mendocino background. It is believed to be the oldest Taoist temple in rural California. You can tour the temple but by appointment only, details of booking are available on the website.

9. Take a stroll in the Botanical Gardens

Get lost amongst the birds and the bees in the enchanting 47 acres (19 hectares) of botanical gardens on the Mendocino coast. Since its creation in 1961 it has continued to grow in splendor and was recently voted as one of the 5 best botanical gardens in the nation, with 70,000 people visiting each year! The garden also has special collections such as rhododendrons, heathers and succulents to peruse.

10. Head to the Glass Beach

This beach is one of the most fascinating beaches in the world, where each pebble is created of fine rounded, colorful pieces of glass. Put your hands in the sand and bring up little glass raindrops of vivid colours that cover the hues of the rainbow. In fact it’s like sitting on a rainbow! A ‘must do’ for any trip to Mendocino.

11. Take a canoe down the Big River tidal estuary

You can rent a canoe and take a journey into the estuary to witness playful seals, otters and birds. The Big River Estuary is the second longest estuary in the whole of California, what makes it special is that it remains undeveloped throughout its 8.3 mile (13 kilometers) length. The estuary is a designated Class 1 which means that it is a nice easy canoe ride for even the novices.

12. Ride the Skunk Train (from USD 49.95)

There are not many places left that you can ride a Skunk Train, so this is a definite on the list! The round route starts in Fort Bragg and in total is a 1 hour, 7 mile (11 kilometers) trip plenty of time to take in the sights of the infamous Redwood forests and take lots of pictures. The train being 131 years old is certainly worth a picture or two aswell!
