The Palmer Rail Trail, or Palmer-Moose Creek Railroad Trail as it’s sometimes called, is a scenic hiking path that follows an old abandoned railroad bed that connects the small town of Palmer and Moose Creek. The trail is 20.4 kilometers (12.6 miles) long and runs through the forests with stunning views of the serene Matanuska River and the majestic Chugach Range.

The whole trail may be too long for casual hikers and kids but it’s known as an easy to moderate trail when it comes to difficulty. You can also take your dogs with you so long as they’re kept on a leash.

Pioneer Falls is a hidden gem in Palmer that’s not too known to visitors. It’s located just a mile (1.6 kilometers) from Old Glen Highway on Est Knik River Road. Getting to the scenic waterfall requires a short hike but the trail going there is said to be a bit difficult due to the heavy vegetation and the slippery trail. It’s going to be worth it though as the spectacular view the waterfall offers will surely take your breath away.

Bodenburg Butte Hiking Trail, or simply “The Butte” as locals have come to call it, is a 1.6-kilometer (1-mile) trail that’s perfect for those who just want to enjoy a sweet and relaxing stroll with the fam. The trail features a beautiful route with various wildflowers growing here and there on the side of and magnificent 360-degree-views of the Mat-Su Valley and the surrounding mountains.

Formerly the Independence Mines, Independence Mine State Historical Park is a gold-mining museum and a self-guided insightful exploration through a mine camo. Situated in the Talkeetna Mountains, across Hatcher Pass, the park was originally a site for mining gold in Palmer. This historical park used to accommodate more than 200 workers during its peak years and used to mine loads of gold. This was all happening before rumors of World War II led to its shutdown. The park also features a network of paved pathways that make it easy to stroll or hike as you admire the rugged terrain around the mine.

Musk Ox Farm is a non-profit organization in Farm Loop, Alaska. Musk is an Ice Age mammal that used to traverse the land with other mammals such as the saber-tooth tiger. The farm was started by John Teal with the intention of educating the local community of ways of preserving and living with musk.
