Open to the public since 1937, Twyman Park is located on 20 acres (8.09 hectares) of lush green terrain. Old Frisco Trail is the remains of the Frisco Railroad line. It’s popular with hikers, walkers, and, of course, mountain bikers. A delightful surprise is the colorful art murals painted on three of the four bridges. The pathway, comprised of a crushed-stone surface, is somewhat flat and runs along Old Wister Highway through an inviting jungle-like section. While biking you’ll see serene Cavanal Lake. The thick, wooded vegetation is a nice protective shield for bikers from harsh elements like the sun and wind and also adds an unexpected layer of quiet remoteness to the trail.

Around 30 minutes away from Poteau, Oklahoma, the Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center offers a fascinating view of the area’s rich history. The site includes 150 acres (60.70 hectares) of land along the Arkansas River, two interpretive trails, and a half-mile (0.80-kilometer) nature trail. It is the only American Indian archaeological site in all of Oklahoma and shows artifacts that tell the story of the prehistoric Spiro people.
