The Fuller Farm Preserve is a great place to bring your pup, and they even allow dogs to be off-leash as long as they are under voice control and it is not during the summertime nesting season. No matter what season you’re visiting Scarborough, the Fuller Farm Preserve is a beautiful spot to visit. During fall, the trees are vibrant with color and in the winter you can go cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. Fuller Farm Preserve is part of the Scarborough Land Trust and has the largest trail network of the trust. There are 2.9 miles (4.5 km) of trails which wind through pretty wooded scenery and are home to local birds and wildlife.

Ferry Beach is in a location that is protected from large ocean waves by a jetty located at the end of the channel. The gentle water makes it the perfect pick for novice swimmers and families with kids. There is a snack bar as well as a public restroom, so you don’t have to worry about piling the children back in the car until the end of your day. If your family includes a furry friend, Ferry Beach is a great place to take them for a walk or swim during certain times of the year! The thrill of cheering a horse as it races to the finish line can’t be replicated. See the excitement for yourself at Scarborough Downs. See a race of a different variety at the Beech Ridge Motor Speedway. Cars zoom around this 1/3 mile (½ km) track at super-fast speed. The Beech Ridge track has the distinction of being one of just 60 NASCAR sanctioned tracks in the United States, which means the facility meets exceptional criteria. It’s also known for being one of the top short tracks in the country. Tickets average about 15 USD for races in the evenings, but the track opens midday and the earlier you arrive the cheaper tickets can be–you could even get in for free.

The ocean water is still chilly, like many New England waters, but is popular for being warmer than other beaches in the area. Kids will have no problem splashing around. 13. Enjoy the natural landscape along Prouts Neck Cliff Walk
The Cliff Walk at Prouts Neck offers some of the most idyllic scenery in Scarborough. This 4.3 mile (6.9 km) trail winds along the rocky bluffs on Prouts Neck, a peninsula that is surrounded by ocean views. Prouts Neck is a quaint neighborhood and as you walk along the trail you’ll catch glimpses of shingled seaside cottages. Notably, this is where American artist Winslow Homer once lived and worked, and as you take in the nautical vista, smell the ocean roses, and feel the sea breeze in your hair, you’ll understand why this was a place he wanted to capture on canvas. The Cliff Walk connects back to main roads so you can walk as little or as much as you want.

14. Have a look at the Richard Hunnewell House

The Richard Hunnewell House is one of the oldest surviving structures in Maine. The home dates back to 1702 and was built by Hunnewell, an early settler and leader of the local militia. In the centuries since, it has been used as a home and a school, and today is a testament to the early settlers in the area. The home is a charming red Cape-style building with a pointed, shingled roof and white trim. Though you can’t go inside the house, the exterior is well maintained and the grounds have some pretty gardens which are maintained by the Scarborough Garden Club.

15. Check out the amazing artistic work at Winslow Homer Studio
Winslow Homer is one of America’s most beloved painters and well-known for his landscapes and marine subjects. From 1883 to 1910, he lived in a studio on the coast of Prouts Neck and many of his masterpieces were painted during this time. The studio was purchased by the Portland Museum of Art and restored to appear the way it did when Homer lived and worked there. Now, this studio is open to the public so they can learn more about his life and heritage as a Maine artist. The studio is not only historically significant–it is also located on the idyllic Prouts Neck and if you walk around after, you will see how the scenery inspired Homer’s paintings.

You can get a sense of Scarborough’s fun-loving community during either season by attending the Scarborough SummerFest or Scarborough Winter Festival. The summer festival is an evening where you can enjoy music, food, and arcade games. Join a treasure hunt, sign up for a 5K race, or jump around on a bounce house, bouncy obstacle course, and bouncy slide. The winter festival has great options too: the ice rink is free and open for skating throughout the whole event. You can participate in the snow sculpture contest or take a wagon ride. There are fire pits around the festival to keep folks warm and fireworks to end the evening!

If you’re craving something sweet, head to Len Libby, a chocolatier and confectioner who has been providing Scarborough with treats for decades. Today, the store is one of the oldest businesses in the town and they still make all their candies by hand, using the same techniques the founder used in 1927. Many of their chocolates have Maine flavors, like blueberries, or themes, like moose and lobster shapes. They also sell saltwater taffy, lobster gummies, and blueberry tea and coffee. On a hot day, you can also get your sweet fix in the form of an ice cream cone!
