8. Enjoy birdwatching, biking, and fishing at Cove Island Wildlife Sanctuary
Cove Island Wildlife Sanctuary once served as a construction dumpsite. It is now a bird sanctuary sitting on 83 acres (34 ha) of land, with habitats that include grassland, shrub, marsh, and deciduous forest. It is alive with exciting activities like boating, biking, fishing, and swimming. Cove Island Wildlife Sanctuary is also home to over 50 butterfly species. Wading birds, gulls, waterfowl, and other bird species share a habitat here. A mile-long running trail, cycling path, and a children’s play area are some recreation facilities available. 9. Watch ballet and orchestra performances at Stamford Center for the Arts
Stamford Center for the Arts is on Atlantic Street, Stamford, Connecticut. The Rich Forum and Palace Theater are its two distinct facilities. The Rich Forum is located on 307 Atlantic and it features a 757-seater theater. On the upper level is the Rossi Salon, which offers panoramic views of the city. The Palace Theater, located on 61 Atlantic, four blocks away, comprise of a 1,580-seater facility. It was initially opened in 1927 and later renovated in 1983. 10. Admire an amazing display at the House of Lights
House of Lights on 68 Lewelyn Road, is a masterpiece creation of Tony Pampena, a firefighter. The display features over 60,000 lights and runs from Thanksgiving to early January. Lights come on at 5 pm and switch off at 1 am. So masterful is Tony’s work that in 2016, his house featured in “The Great Light Fight,” a television show on ABC. Hundreds of visitors come to see this marvelous work of art that also coincides with the Christmas season. According to Tony, he has been running these lights for over 30 years now. You are at liberty to look at the views from your car or step out and get up close. More so, you should take a stroll around the immensely detailed house.

11. Relax and have a picnic at West Beach
West Beach is on Seaside Avenue. It comprises 26 acres (10.5 ha) of sandy beach, a playground, and sports fields. The sandy beach offers views of Long Island South and three islands: Salt, Duck, and Menunketesuck. You can carry a book to read as you relax on the well-maintained beach. Children are welcome too, and there is no limit to the activities you can engage in as a family. A picnic area near the bathhouse, complete with picnic tables, provides just the right setting for families, the lone visitor, or groups of friends. Food is readily available from nearby takeout eateries. The area also has restrooms. Parking is plentiful, although you will need a permit if you’re visiting between May and September.

12. Soak in the tranquility at Fort Stamford
Fort Stamford is located on 900 Westover Road, Stamford. It is on an archeological site where soldiers who were involved in the American Revolutionary War erected military earthworks. Enclosing the garden are white Italian balustrades. On a visit to the garden, you can relax on one of the benches as you take in the surrounding beauty. Remember to bring a camera along to take photos with purple-spiked flowers in the background. Fancy having some quiet time watching butterflies moving gracefully among the flowers. You will also spot bees in their never-ending quest for nectar. Every two weeks, Stamford Garden Club members meet to work on the garden’s maintenance. 13. Have some fun at Mill River Park Collaborative
Mill River Park Collaborative is an expansive recreational space where people come to play and relax while connecting with nature. It features a playground, skating rink, and a carousel. The Steven & Alexandra Cohen Skating Center covers over 9,000 square feet (836 sqm). 150 skaters can use the outdoor rink at a time, while a lodge at the site offers skate rentals, blade sharpening, and hot refreshments. During the festive season, the arena hosts DJ nights and festive characters on Sunday afternoons. In the warm summer months, the rink turns into a water fountain that spews illuminated water springs. A carousel pavilion featuring 30 animals, all handcrafted, stands invitingly proud. After the ride, an array of snacks awaits you at the Carousel Café.

14. Explore Mianus River State Park
Mianus River State Park is an urban forest spanning 391 acres (158 ha). It features rock formations, hiking trails with a cave, and wetlands. The Mianus River, a significant attraction, runs across the park covering a 2-mile (3.2km) stretch. The forest consists of deciduous and evergreen trees with a ground cover of wildflowers, toadstools, grasses, and ferns. You will spot kingfishers and herons along the river. Warblers and woodpeckers are common sights in the park as well. Mianus River State Park is also home to the white-tailed deer, turtles, spotted salamanders, and the pickerel frog. Apart from spotting birds and wildlife, visitors can ski on one of the river trails, or go fishing for trout at the Mianus River.

15. Spend a day at Kosciuszko Park
Kosciuszko Park features a walkway that encircles a playground and other fields with loop trails extending to the waterfront. Besides, visitors on a wheelchair can enjoy views, although not all areas are accessible to the disabled. Kosciuszko Park features birdwatching trails, wildlife viewing, playgrounds, and picnic sites. All picnic areas have benches and tables where you can relax and soak in the views. One of the trails leads to a beach where you can sit and tan your skin for a bit. You will also see Stamford Harbor from the park. Baseball fields are available too, but you need a permit for access.
