The main path runs the length of the forest which stretches some 800 hectares (2,000 acres) and includes hilly heights up to 800 meters (2,660 feet).

Centuries later, the Ottomans updated and rebuilt the fortress. Prior to the crusades, there was a settlement on this land as far back as the Iron Age (1200 BCE to 1000 BCE). Time took pieces from this historic structure, but the earthquake of 1837 tore it down to ruins.
