Garmisch used to be “Germaneskau”, an 800-year-old German district believed to be the original settlement of the Teutonic tribe. Partenkirchen was formerly Partanum, a Roman town which served as the trade route between Augsburg and Venice. Ludwigsstrasse is the main street that originates from the Roman road. Under the rule of Adolf Hitler, these two towns were united in preparation for the Winter Olympic Games in 1936.
Today, it is a famous ski and hiking destination in Bavaria, Germany. To the dismay of Partenkirchen residents, it is better known as “Garmisch” with the modern nickname of “Ga-Pa” coming from the Polish.
