Even though the mighty Route 66 cuts through Oklahoma, there seem to be very few reasons to explore the Sooner State. Known primarily as a major producer of natural gas, oil and agricultural products, Oklahoma has a “plain and uninteresting” image that plagues many of the US states in the Great Plains. But delve a little further into cities such as Tulsa, and you can find nuggets of interesting attractions and plenty of recreational activities to keep yourself occupied. Tulsa and the surrounding suburbs such as Sand Springs offer great Airbnb vacation rentals to base yourself in, so check out our top picks.
Oklahoma has a rich native American past, being the end point of the Trail of Tears in which 16,000 Cherokee Indian people were relocated to in the 19th century. Some of those native American history lingers on in Tulsa, in places such as the Creek Council Oak Park where the first town hall meeting in Tulsa was held under an oak tree. This cozy and private cottage studio for two guests is just two blocks away from the park, and is also close to other parks such as the Veterans Park and the River Parks. There is also a patio with water features and seats in the cottages, if you prefer to laze about in the premises.

The stereotypical description of Oklahoma is that of a flat dust bowl, but Tulsa dispels that notion with abundant and beautiful rolling green terrain. The reason is that it is situated at the convergence of the Great Plains and the Ozark Plateau, giving it plenty of rain yearly. This petite studio house for two guests is close to three green areas, the Veterans Park, the Maple Park and the Woodward Park, so you can enjoy strolling through the lush lawns and shady trees during your stay in the “dust bowl”.

There is actually a Swan Lake in Tulsa, and it is home to plenty of —you guessed it— swans. This elegant private suite is just by the lake, and it is part of a converted Colonial-era farmhouse that is nearly 100 years old. The suite is tastefully decorated with classical-era furniture, although the host does not provide a TV nor a kitchen area. Nevertheless it is a decent option amid a peaceful estate. Curiously, the suite has a bird theme; it is not a swan, but a peacock.

This snug garden apartment is located close to the famous highway, making it a good pit-stop for those travelling on the Mother Road. It has all the necessary amenities for a comfortable stay, and is also close to downtown Tulsa, with all its eateries, theaters and shopping malls.

Across the Arkansas River, on the other side of downtown Tulsa, are quiet suburban neighborhoods which nonetheless still offer some decent Airbnb choices. This guestroom is well-served by three highways that encircle the neighborhood, and can accommodate up to four guests. The set-up is no-frills, but everything that is needed for a comfortable stay seems to be available here. And while you are here, you can explore the nearby Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness, a huge park where you can go hiking, trail-running or mountain-biking. Downtown Tulsa is just about a 10-minute drive from here.

Sand Springs is largely a suburb of Tulsa, but as it is on the western boundaries of the city, there are some interesting countryside accommodation available, such as this outstanding lakeside log cabin on a 350-acre (141.6-hectare) ranch. Enjoy waking up next to a crystal-clear lake, with country breakfast provided by the ranch, and then spending the day fishing and hiking on the premises. The ranch can also organize activities such as campfires, archery lessons, tomahawk throwing and animal feeding. But if you just wish to chill out, then do it in the most comfortable way possible — sleeping on a hammock kindly included in the cabin. All these rural living is available a mere 15 minutes away from downtown.
