Even though the mighty Route 66 cuts through Oklahoma, there seem to be very few reasons to explore the Sooner State. Known primarily as a major producer of natural gas, oil and agricultural products, Oklahoma has a “plain and uninteresting” image that plagues many of the US states in the Great Plains. But delve a little further into cities such as Tulsa, and you can find nuggets of interesting attractions and plenty of recreational activities to keep yourself occupied. Tulsa and the surrounding suburbs such as Sand Springs offer great Airbnb vacation rentals to base yourself in, so check out our top picks.
1. No frills guestroom across Arkansas River (from USD 30)
Across the Arkansas River, on the other side of downtown Tulsa, are quiet suburban neighborhoods which nonetheless still offer some decent Airbnb choices. This guestroom is well-served by three highways that encircle the neighborhood, and can accommodate up to four guests. The set-up is no-frills, but everything that is needed for a comfortable stay seems to be available here. And while you are here, you can explore the nearby Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness, a huge park where you can go hiking, trail-running or mountain-biking. Downtown Tulsa is just about a 10-minute drive from here.

2. Studio house close to three green parks (from USD 103)
The stereotypical description of Oklahoma is that of a flat dust bowl, but Tulsa dispels that notion with abundant and beautiful rolling green terrain. The reason is that it is situated at the convergence of the Great Plains and the Ozark Plateau, giving it plenty of rain yearly. This petite studio house for two guests is close to three green areas, the Veterans Park, the Maple Park and the Woodward Park, so you can enjoy strolling through the lush lawns and shady trees during your stay in the “dust bowl”.

3. Peacock-themed suite by the Swan Lake (from USD 114)
There is actually a Swan Lake in Tulsa, and it is home to plenty of —you guessed it— swans. This elegant private suite is just by the lake, and it is part of a converted Colonial-era farmhouse that is nearly 100 years old. The suite is tastefully decorated with classical-era furniture, although the host does not provide a TV nor a kitchen area. Nevertheless it is a decent option amid a peaceful estate. Curiously, the suite has a bird theme; it is not a swan, but a peacock.
