Somewhere in the world, a charming coastal town, set beside a crescent-shaped bay, lies on the Pacific Ocean. San Juan Del Sur in Nicaragua makes the perfect getaway for those who are seeking an eclectic mixture of beach and small town, food and shopping. Best described as ‘quaint’, San Juan Del Sur offers plenty of restaurants and bars. Below is our guide of the top spots to visit during your next trip there. Interested to find the best places to eat, drink and shop like a local? Read on!

Nacho Libre Bar and Restaurant

Delicious homemade Bareback burger & seasoned fries.

During the day, Nacho Libre Bar and Restaurant does not look like much, but upon commencement of business marked by the open doors, it will be hard for you to resist this lively little joint. Serving up the best homemade burgers in town and their famous fried pickles (a.k.a. “Little Willies” and our favorite), Nacho Libre is a great place to sit and enjoy your food along with some freshly made cocktails.

Our top choice of burgers is the “Bareback”. A little twist on your normal bacon cheeseburger, this delicious savory option comes stacked with cheddar cheese, crisp bacon, onion rings, tangy BBQ sauce, all sandwiched between locally made hamburger buns.

A well-known local hangout, Nacho Libre is a great place to meet some new friends or travelers. Don’t worry if you aren’t into hamburgers, they also have delicious vegetarian options. While their food menu rarely changes, their daily drink specials are not something to miss. We indulged in a couple of delicious fresh ginger-rum cocktails and their spicy margaritas. Cheers to that! Nacho Libre compared to other local restaurants is reasonably priced and is a cash-only restaurant, so be prepared and stop by one of the many ATM’s in town before you get too comfortable!

San Juan del Sur Cervecería

Grab a cold craft beer at the local brewery!

If you love draft beer and good food, this is a must-visit while visiting the area. Located a few blocks East of the beach on Avenida Mercado, this fairly new “brewpub” is one of our top spots, which we highly recommend you to try. Before you get too enthusiastic, note that San Juan del Sur Cerveceria is closed on every Tuesday. The opening hours are 12 p.m. – 12 a.m. during weekdays and on the weekends, they open early at 10 a.m. for their infamous brunch specials.

Typically, at least twice a week, they have live music from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m.. If you happen to be here on Friday, you are in luck! This is the day that they offer a tour of their on-site brewery around 5:30 p.m., which includes free tastings of their draft beer options, depending what’s on tap that week. We highly recommend their pulled pork sliders and any of the craft beer choices. The perfect pairing if you ask us!

Auric Clothing Shop

Locally made clothing for men & women at Auric.

Auric is a local clothing shop that offers a bit of everything in the local sense and they have expanded in the past year to a bigger & better shop in the center of town. Creating handmade fashions both inspired by and produced locally in Nicaragua, this shop is our favorite place to stock up on comfortable tees, dresses and even jewelry! It also provides great options for souvenirs! Their prices range from 5 - 55 USD and they carry both men & women’s fashions. With their quirky statement tees and hand tie-dyed clothing, it is hard to choose, and you will want one of everything! If you’re lucky you can even find them hand-dying the latest collections right outside in the back of the shop! Be sure to make your way in here & support the growing local business.

Spend at least 3 nights in San Juan Del Sur!

Despite being a fairly small town, San Juan Del Sur has a lot of options to offer for everyone! From locally made craft beers, mouth-watering burgers and homemade inexpensive clothing, we recommend to at least spend 3 nights to get a feel of this surf-beach town. We are definitely looking forward to revisiting the area and exploring some more of their local hangouts and town favorites.
