Beppu and Yufuin are two of the most famous hot spring towns in Oita prefecture. One great trip itinerary is to visit the Beppu Hells and then to go to your accommodation in Yufuin. The hot springs here have a distinct blue color.
Beppu is famous for the Beppu Hells
One of the Beppu Hells, Umi Jigoku, is a boiling water pond created by the eruption of Mt Tsurumi. It has the blue color of the sea, hence why it was named Umi Jigoku (literally “sea hell”). There is so much steam that sometimes you need to wait until you can catch a glimpse of the blue water. The local specialty is a steamed pudding and hot spring eggs. They’re quite delicious!
The other Beppu Hells are Kamado Jigoku, Chinoike Jigoku, Oniishi Bozu Jigoku, Yama Jigoku.
In the evening you can go to Yufuin
My accommodation at Yufuin was Nobiro Sanso inn.
The room is really cosy and from the window you can see Mt Yufudake and hear the murmur of the nearby river stream.
The hot spring is at the end of the corridor
Actually, there are several baths here – a family one, a private one, even a hand-made one! First time I stay at such an inn. And there wasn’t even extra money to pay or a reservation to make. I could use any bath whenever I wanted, so I managed to tour them all.
The cobalt blue hot spring
This bath looks cobalt blue in good weather. Of course, it’s a freely flowing hot spring with large quantities of water. A real top-class hot spring in Yufuin.
Mt Yufudake
This is the view to Mt Yufudake from the room.
Nobiru Sanso inn feels relaxing as if you’re at home. The food is nothing extravagant, but it’s well-made with a good balance of warm and cold items, and it’s served with great care.
I strongly recommend staying overnight in such a relaxing inn in Yufuin.
