When thinking about Budapest what do you associate it with? Maybe the beautiful bridges crossing the Danube River, or maybe the mesmerizing castles and impressive architecture? Of course, you can easily find all of these in Budapest, but its symbol, its pride, and I would even say its masterpiece is the Hungarian Parliament Building. The beauty of the Hungarian Parliament Building is well known all around the world, and some people even compare it with the Westminster Palace in London. It is considered to be one of the biggest and oldest parliament buildings in the world; being the second largest in Europe. So as you can understand, when traveling to Budapest you simply can’t miss visiting such an impressive sight!

The location of the Hungarian Parliament just couldn’t be better. Situated on the bank of the Danube River between the Széchenyi Chain Bridge and the Margit Hid (Margaret Bridge), it looks like a rare gem which dazzles with its splendor. Its construction was commissioned by the Hungarian State Assembly in 1880. A competition for the design of the building was held where 19 projects were presented, and the design of the architect Imre Steindl was chosen as the winning one. Nowadays, we can admire the final result of the construction which was completed in 1902. The creation of this talented architect is a magnificent building in neo-gothic style, displaying both Renaissance and Baroque characters too.

Don’t miss the change of guards at the Hungarian Parliament!

One more spectacular scene not to be missed is the change of guards in front of the Hungarian Parliament. It takes place every hour, and on Saturdays all the manifestation is even more interesting, as the guards of honor in the Hungarian army arrange a small show. You can even take some pictures with the guards and have a nice memory of it.

Enchanted by the splendor of the Hungarian Parliament facade, we shouldn’t forget that it is just the tip of the iceberg; the rest of its beauty being hidden inside the building. Fortunately, for those eager to explore the inside part of the Parliament, guided tours are organized in 8 languages, so you can easily choose any tour you prefer. Once you have decided which language tour you want to join, and have purchased the ticket, all that is left is to be on time, or even a bit earlier in the hall of the ticket office. You will go through a security scanner control, and after this the tour begins. Its duration is about 45 minutes, and believe me, it is worth every penny you paid for it.

You’ll be guided through the pompous interiors of the Hungarian Parliament designed in neo-Gothic style mixed with Renaissance and even Byzantine influences. You’ll have the opportunity to see its most interesting parts, as the tour includes the main entrance stairs and hall, one of the lobbies, Congress Hall, Assembly Hall, Delegation Hall, and the Hungarian Crown Jewels. But the most amazing part is the domed hall, which is the biggest of all. This is the place where the scepter, orb, sword, and the most important Hungarian relic - the Holy Crown of Hungary, which is more than a thousand years old, are displayed!

Good to know!

Generally, the ticket for visiting the Hungarian Parliament for adults costs 5200 Ft (approximately 18 USD), and for students 2600 Ft (approximately 9 USD). But if you are from a European Union country, you’ll have a discount. After the discount, the adult ticket will cost you 2000 Ft (approximately 7 USD), and the student ticket will be 1000 Ft (approximately 3.5 USD). Just don’t forget your passport to prove your citizenship status, or your student card.
