If you visit the nearby Lucca Cathedral during your stay, make sure to check out the Holy Face of Lucca. This big, dark crucifix is wrapped in an incredible mystery. We don't know who carved it or how it ended up in Lucca.
There is a great legend about this. Supposedly, the crucifix was carved by Nicodemus himself, a disciple of Christ, but the face of Christ was made by an angel while he was resting. Recent studies have confirmed the origin of the work dating back to the eighth and ninth centuries.
Another legend tells how the crucifix accidentally went by sea to Luni, and from there, a cart, pulled by oxen, brought it to Lucca, to the church of San Frediano. However, at night, the cross disappeared from the church and appeared next to today's cathedral. They then decided to accept the "destiny" and put it exactly where it remains to this day.
In the Middle Ages, the Holy Face was a big attraction for pilgrims on Via Francigena, and they stopped at the city to see it. Residents of the city celebrate the relic on September 13. A procession starts from the church of San Frediano to the cathedral.
