Alghero is a beautiful medieval town in northwest Sardinia that dates all the way back to early 12th-century. Once a military stronghold due to its strategic location by the Mediterranean Sea, it is today a booming resort town that draws visitors to its golden beaches and its charming town. The Catalan influence remains strong in Alghero, despite it being nearly three centuries since the occupiers vacated the town. Ramparts armed with formidable catapults are still visible along the defensive seawalls. Within the old town, cobblestone paths lead you towards bustling piazzas, winding past narrow rows of sandy-colored buildings. There are also a number of lively cafes and restaurants serving excellent traditional local fare.

Here, we offer 10 bases from which you can start exploring the cultural and natural gems of the port town.

We handpicked these listings carefully, considering (wherever possible) Superhost status, recent guest reviews, location, accommodation type, prices, availability of dates, decor, and amenities. The image galleries get refreshed with the latest updates regularly. They were last updated on November 26, 2024.

7. Hotel El Balear (from USD 78)

Hotel El Balear is ideal for those who intend to spend most of their time exploring, and only need a simple and clean accomodation to rest for the night. The family run hotel is named after a doomed vessel that ran aground on the Algerian coast in the 19th-century. Service at El Balear though is far from the fate of its namesake. The hotel is highly rated for the friendliness of its staff. As the only 3-star seafront hotel near the town centre, it is one of the most value-for-money accommodations in Alghero’s vicinity.

The bucolic Bonsai Farm is situated at Santa Maria La Palma, 15 km (9.3 mi) north of Alghero. Covering 4 hectares (9.8 acres) of land, the flax-colored buildings of Bonsai are surrounded by orchards, olive groves, and vegetable gardens that afford visitors ample space to roam and explore.

The radiance of summer is brought indoors with walls, curtains, and homeware splashed with the entire spectrum of yellow. At mealtimes, guests are treated to a delectable Mediterranean or Italian course made with locally sourced food produce. Bonsai Farm may be a 20 min drive away from the main town, but there really is no better base from which to experience the dreamy Sardinian countryside.

9. Loft in the main square (from USD 52)

The simple title ‘Loft in the main square’ undersells this gem of a property. Minimalist white-washed furnishings augment the vibrance of the pastel-hued walls, while stone and wood accents remind visitors that the apartment is housed after all in a historic building. The loft is located at Piazza Civica, the dynamic square that was once the the administrative centre of the city. Santa Maria Cathedral, as well as the Royal palace, are mere steps away from the front door. With the Loft in the main square, there is no need to compromise on class, comfort, or convenience.

10. Alghero centro storico vista mare (from USD 131)

If you love the spacious layout of a loft, but prefer a more traditional Catalan-style decor, Alghero centro storico vista mare is just for you. The apartment’s windows open up to gorgeous views of the promenade, comparable to any first class seafront hotel. At midday, a generous stream of natural light sets the white walls aglow, yet the flat never heats up because of the cooling floor tiles.

Despite the peacefulness of the place, there are a number of restaurants and clubs just a short stroll away. Piazzas, churches, and beaches are also easily accessed, making Alghero centro storico vista mare a perfect base to start your Sardinian summer vacation.
