Located in the western half of the Mountain Province of the Philippines, Sagada remained mostly untouched by Spanish influences until late in the 19th century. You can tell the indigenous culture has a stronger presence here than in some surrounding provinces, which makes Sagada an excellent place to explore. Perhaps one of the most intriguing things you’ll see in Sagada are the famous hanging coffins - and yes, there are really bodies in them! The use of these hanging coffins is a tradition found in several Eastern countries, and not just anyone is allowed this type of “burial”; among the qualifications, you have to be married and have had grandchildren. You’ll also find many other exciting places to explore, including waterfalls and caves (spelunking, anyone?) and participating in traditional celebrations with the locals. For more information on the best places to stay while exploring Sagada, the Philippines, be sure to read on.
