Hiroshima, meaning “Broad Island” in Japanese, is located along the coast of the Seto Inland Sea and is the largest city in the Chūgoku region of western Honshu, which is the largest island in Japan. It is also the capital of Hiroshima Prefecture. This city, with a population of about 1.1 million, is best known for being hit by an atomic bomb during World War II, which killed about 80,000 people. About 70% of the city’s buildings were also destroyed.
In September 1945, most of Hiroshima’s architecture was further destroyed when it was struck by the Makurazaki Typhoon. With help from the national government, Hiroshima started to rebuild itself after the war, to eventually become a modern, industrialised city filled with museums, memorial monuments and attractions such as the castle of Rijō, Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine, Shukkei-en, Fudōin, Mitaki-dera, and the Hijiyama Park.
In terms of accommodation, Hiroshima has an abundance of hotels, ryokans (a type of traditional Japanese inn that originated in the Edo period) and guest houses. They each differ in many aspects, such that ryokans serve as a more traditional choice of accommodation as compared to the modern interior designs of hotels. To guide you, we’ve prepared the perfect list of the best accommodations in Hiroshima, with recommendations of both Airbnb homes to the modern hotels.
We handpicked these listings carefully, considering (wherever possible) Superhost status, recent guest reviews, location, accommodation type, prices, availability of dates, decor, and amenities. The image galleries get refreshed with the latest updates regularly. They were last updated on October 23, 2024.

Traditional home in Naka-ku, Hiroshima-city
Highly recommended! The house is located in the central of Hiroshima, and it is very convenient for shopping, eating and taking the bus to anywhere in Hiroshima. It is decorated well! Everything is prepared very well, and we could even do simple cooking for my baby in the house. The washing machine can act as a dryer, which is very useful for us. The most important thing, Sora is very nice and considerate. Everything is prepared very well, and he provided us with a lot of information for our travels, he marked the drug store, supermarket and park on the map for us, he also prepared Chinese instructions in the house. In conclusion, my family enjoyed the stay in Sora’s house! Chang

Traditional home in Hiroshima-city (from USD 112)
What a wonderful experience. Tomomi, Tomohiro and their family went out of their way to create a relaxing holiday for us. We stayed with our 8-month-old son, and were made to feel so welcome with a car seat and cot provided, not to mention the new friends our son made playing with Tomomi’s children! We even joined the family to learn how to make traditional plum brandy. The meals were truly delicious, we ate all of our meals there. I highly recommend Tomomi and Tomohiro’s cooking. The room itself was beautiful and so quiet - nothing but lovely nature sounds at night. Our 3 nights here were a welcome relief from the fast-paced city stays we had previously, and turned out to be the highlight of our trip to Japan. Thank you again for a wonderful stay! Shelly
The hosts are also very welcoming. They will be more than happy to guide you around the neighbourhood, including sightseeing and recreational tours. They also offer a taste their Japanese cuisine “Washoku”, and you might even have a chance to prepare the food with them. The house is surrounded by paddy fields, old shrines, and temples and in the winter, guests can visit the ski field or the onsens (hot springs) nearby. The apartment is also just a 35-minute ride to Miyajima and a 45-minute ride to the Atomic Bomb dome at central Hiroshima.

Traditional home in Hatsukaichi-city (from USD 118)
This traditional home is located in the serene neighbourhood of Hatsukaichi and is also right beside a supermarket. Hatsukaichi is a city located 20km (12.4 miles) west of Hiroshima’s city centre and has an estimated population of 120,000 people. Interestingly, the name was derived from a market that was held on the 20th of every month during the Kamakura period with hatsuka meaning “20th day” and ichi meaning “market”. It was named a designated city in 1988.
This non-smoking home consists of two bedrooms and can accommodate up to 6 people. Facilities include Wi-Fi, air-con, hot tub and more. This home is also wheelchair-friendly.

Very welcoming hotel. The staff were great, really helpful and accommodating. The hotel faces the sea front but you access it via the main market street though. Don’t let the noisy street put you off. Everyone goes home by 6pm, so it’s super quiet. It’s only a 5-minute walk from the ferry terminal. It’s one road back from the sea front, towards the start of the shops.

What's your pick?
Would you rather try something new and stay in a traditional Japanese home or opt for the modern hotels? Either way, your stay in Hiroshima will be nothing short of worthwhile. Do check out the festivals and ceremonies when you’re there! Hiroshima is home to quite a number of festivals that range from cultural, memorial to even food!
The most notable one would have to be the Peace Memorial Ceremony, which happens on August 6 every year. The ceremony marks the anniversary of the atomic bombing in 1945, which left about 70,000 people dead. The ceremony is also attended by many hibakusha, which is the Japanese term for the survivors of the 1945 atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The ceremonies are held at 8:15 am, the time the bomb was dropped. Air raid sirens can be heard, followed by a minute of silence, and then appeals for peace by the mayor of Hiroshima. At 8 pm, a second ceremony will take place where a thousand colorful lanterns are floated down the river.
Another festival you should look out for would be the Food Festival, which takes place on the last weekend in October. From international delicacies to local favorites, from roasted slabs of meat and seafood to delicious vegetarian-friendly dishes and desserts, you’ll be spoilt for choice with the multiple stalls lining Hiroshima Castle and parts of Chuo Park. There will also be a flea market and cultural performances.
So what are you waiting for, there’s just so much to discover at Hiroshima!
