While outdoor music festivals are not a novel concept, the scenic location and the evolving taste in music have helped popularize the Ziro Festival of Music held in Arunachal Pradesh. The brainchild of Bobby Hano and Menwhopause guitarist Anup Kutty, the festival was first organized in 2012. Today, it has grown to become one of the biggest tourism events in the state and draws thousands of people annually.

Past artist line-ups have included the likes of Japanese rock band Acid Mothers Temple and American drummer Steve Shelley. Ziro Festival of Music is built around a passion for music and admiration for the beautiful setting of North East India. The festival is hosted by the indigenous Apatani tribe, who call Ziro their home and own the land where the festival takes place. This is also an eco-friendly festival that employs local artisans to construct sturdy bamboo stages and other installations.

Ziro Festival of Music is an outdoor music festival that promotes both local and international independent musical talents. The festival is supported by the state Tourism Department and has helped put Ziro on the map. It takes place across two stages that are built from the ground up by tribal artisans. The land is borrowed from the local Apatani tribe who are the original settlers of Ziro.

Northeast India is considered one of the safest places to travel to and the festival welcomes people of all ages. In addition to the exceptional musical talent serenading attendees across four days, there are also opportunities to enjoy arts and crafts, storytime, workshops, and excellent food.

Impressively, it is a sustainable festival that only relies on bamboo to construct its stages, stalls, and all the other infrastructure needed to successfully host a music festival. It also applies a strict no-plastic policy and uses only biodegradable utensils such as bamboo glasses and Tamul plates. Attendees are in fact encouraged to bring reusable bottles, and water is complimentary at the venue!

With rolling hills and lush greenery, Ziro Valley is a pristine natural wonder in the remote Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. The valley is located in Northeastern India and is 105 km (65.24 mi) from the capital Itanagar and 462 km (287.07 mi) from the Guwahati airport. Ziro Valley is on the UN’s tentative list of World Heritage Sites due to the rich cultural heritage of the Apatani tribe who call this place home.

The name Ziro is usually used to refer to the town in Arunachal Pradesh but is often interchangeably used with Ziro Valley, the region, and Ziro Circle, a district sub-division. There are approximately 143 small villages within the area, and they are all tagged in Ziro Circle. Most of these are small settlements of less than 200 inhabitants and are located within 10 km (6.21 mi) of Ziro and Old Ziro.

Since the inception of the music festival, Ziro Valley has become a popular stop for tourists looking to interact with the tribe and hike some of the most pristine trails in India. It might take a long trip to reach the place, but it will be well worth the effort.

What is the best way to reach Ziro?

The city of Guwahati serves as the gateway to Northeastern India and enjoys exceptional connectivity to the rest of the country. If you are taking a flight, it is best to land at Guwahti’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, which serves multiple direct flights from major cities. From there you can hire a cab or take an overnight bus to Ziro. Along the way, you will cross the mighty Brahmaputra, one of the longest rivers in India.

Donyi Polo Airport in Itanagar is also an option but it currently only has direct flights from Kolkata.

If you are arriving by train, the most convenient way is to take a train to Guwahati Railway Station, which is connected to major Indian cities. From there take another train to Naharlagun, and finally a bus or a cab to Ziro Valley. You can travel directly from Guwahati or stop at North Lakhimpur for the night.

For those traveling in a group, the best option might be to book a six-seater cab from Guwahati Airport/Itanagar Airport/Naharlagun Station to Ziro. Prices vary depending on the pickup location and date of arrival. The cab is at your disposal for the duration of the festival and includes local sightseeing.

Once you land in Northeast India, which is made up of eight states, it is quite easy to feel like you are in some other country altogether. The bustling locales that are synonymous with India make way for verdant landscapes and litter-free cities. Because Arunachal Pradesh shares an international border with China, movement across the state is regulated and everyone needs to apply for permits. Let’s make sure you are prepared before you visit the Ziro Festival of Music.

What kind of permits are needed for Arunachal Pradesh?

A permit is required for all non-residents to enter the state. Indian nationals need to obtain the Inner Line Permit (ILP) either through their travel agent or online before entering the state.

Foreign nationals have to apply for the Protected Area Permit (PAP) through Indian embassies in their country of residence or through a recognized travel agent. A PAP is issued for 10 days and can be extended up to an additional 7 days.

Is it really difficult to reach Ziro?

One of the reasons this part of India has managed to maintain its natural beauty is that it has always been difficult to access most cities in the region. However, Guwahati is serviced by multiple flights and trains daily from all over the country. And once you reach there, it is easy to make your way to Ziro.

Are sunrise and sunset times different in Ziro?

Since you are in the easternmost state in India, you will experience a much earlier sunrise. The average time for sunrise during September is around 5 am, while sunset is between 5 to 5:30 pm.

Packing tips for the festival

Make sure to pack comfortable clothes for the daytime, and a fleece or similar jacket type for the night. Do not forget the rain boots. If you are planning on camping, you might want to bring your own linens and blanket as well.

Are there places to stay in Ziro?

There are a lot of clean and comfortable accommodation options in Ziro. The festival also organizes its own campgrounds.

What is the best way to travel around the valley?

Renting a bicycle is the best way to get around the many attractions and villages in the valley. Moreover, the area surrounding your hotel or homestay could easily be explored on foot.

Past workshops have focused on indigenous music, yoga, and storytelling for kids.

Additionally, Ziro Lit Fest is a free-for-all event that hosts workshops on creative writing and effective storytelling.

Ziro Valley is wonderfully located in central Arunachal Pradesh, leaving it up to visitors if they wish to explore the eastern or the western part of the state after attending the festival. In the west is the capital Itanagar, and the popular towns of Bomdila and Tawang, which are famous for their monasteries. As you head toward the eastern side of Ziro, you will come across small villages, but the main attractions are the national parks, including Namdapha National Park & Tiger Reserve. Realistically, due to the long travel time required, it would only be possible to explore one side in a single visit.

Please note that foreign tourists are permitted to travel on designated circuits only and need to travel in groups of two or more at all times.

Namdapha National Park & Tiger Reserve

One of the largest protected areas in the country, this natural attraction is famous for being home to tigers, leopards, snow leopards, and clouded leopards. The area consists of a variety of flora, including evergreen forests and alpine forests, making it one of the most biodiverse places in India.

Talley Valley Wildlife Sanctuary

If you are short on time, visit the nearby Talley Valley Wildlife Sanctuary instead, which is approximately 30 km (18.64 mi) from Ziro. This is also a popular area for trekking and one of the most easily accessible places to spot the endangered clouded leopard. You can also spot Pleioblastus simonii, a species of bamboo that’s unique to this valley.

Itanagar

The state capital is the first stop on any tourist trail as they begin exploring the more developed western part of the state. Popular attractions here include Ita Fort, Ganga Lake, and the historic Gompa Temple. A couple of days here is sufficient before flying back home or venturing further along.

Tawang

The historic town of Tawang is surrounded by the Himalayas and is one of the most visited places in the state. It is famous for Tawang Monastery, the largest Buddhist monastery in India. The monastery’s location on top of a mountain makes it even more gorgeous. Tawang is part of the Itanagar-Bomdila-Tawang circuit, which is the most preferred itinerary. The routes are scenic with prayer flags fluttering in the wind, the roads are well maintained, and lodging is easily available.
