10 Extreme Indonesian Foods You Should Try
Indonesia may be renowned as an archipelago for its phenomenal cuisine, from the tempting satay to the mouth-watering nasi goreng. On the other hand, the country has a range of unexpectedly bizarre foods beyond foreigners' imaginations, from the grilled bats to the skewed snake. Many regard exotic delicacies as something healthy and rich in taste. Book a vacation rental or resort accommodation and plan your trip! If there's one thing to do in Indonesia, it's eat! Keep reading to discover some extreme Indonesian foods you should try at least once in your lifetime. **Travel advisory** Take note that Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in the East Nusa Tenggara province has recently erupted. According to ET Travel World, the ensuing volcanic ash clouds have disrupted air travel in the region, especially Bali, resulting in flight cancellations among other issues. According to AP News, the volcano previously erupted in January 2024, with the subsequent eruptions being tracked in November 2024. I'd suggest making sure there are no eruption warnings before booking your tickets!

14 Must-Buy Food Items From Pusat Oleh-Oleh Bu Rudy, Surabaya, As Recommended By A Local
If you've visited Surabaya for food shopping, you probably noticed posters everywhere of a senior Chinese-Indonesian woman with short and curly black hair and a lively smile. Underneath her image will be the words "Bu Rudy." The woman's name is Lanny Siswadi. It all began on July 2, 1995, when Bu Rudy's husband went shrimp fishing. Bu Rudy then sold the fried shrimp that she had cooked herself to her fellow gymnasium mates, and the rest is history. After its establishment, people raved about Bu Rudy's delicious prawn-based food items, which led her to establish Pusat Oleh-Oleh (abbreviated as Pusol) Bu Rudy in the Dharmahusada area of East Surabaya. She officially named this Pusol "Terlengkap, Terbesar & Termewah di Surabaya" ("Most Complete, Largest & Most Luxurious in Surabaya"). My favorite Bu Rudy products at Pusol include the sambal in jars and the famous udang goreng kering (fried shrimp). To discover yours, check out my recommendations of must-buy food items from Pusat Oleh-Oleh Bu Rudy, Surabaya.

14 Food Items In Galaxy Mall Surabaya That You Must Try Before You Depart
Unlike more well-known shopping malls such as Tunjungan Plaza or Plaza Surabaya in Central Surabaya, Galaxy Mall Surabaya's location in East Surabaya may require some people to put in extra effort to get there. Fortunately, the Trans Semanggi bus from Tunjungan Plaza's Kaliasin bus stop can take you to the mall's Kertajaya Indah bus stop. Additionally, the "Galaxy" bus stops right in front of Galaxy Mall 3 (the new and modernized Galaxy Mall) and Galaxy Mall 1 (the old Galaxy Mall), connecting to Trans Semanggi's electric bus' Purabaya bus stop route. Galaxy Mall Surabaya also includes Galaxy Mall 2, which is adjacent to Galaxy Mall 1. Both Galaxy Mall 1 and 2 are the older portions of Galaxy Mall, making Galaxy Mall 3 the most modernized and stylish area. Visitors can also expect a unique culinary experience throughout all areas of the mall. There are some stalls and restaurants that I think should not be missed when you're here. Keep scrolling to discover the 14 food items in Galaxy Mall Surabaya that you must try before you depart!

Cassava Snacks: Unbelievably Yummy And Affordable Local Delicacies Of Indonesia
Cassava, also known as tapioca or yukka root, is an edible root vegetable just like potato or taro. The plant was brought to Indonesia by the Portuguese in the 16th century and it became a popular food in the 20th century, especially in the island of Java, as rice was scarce. This led people to eat cassava (steamed or fried) as a substitute for rice and it makes sense because the rich carbohydrate it contains makes cassava a very good source of energy. Since then, people also learn to make various snacks from cassava, resulting in various types of cassava cakes. When visiting Indonesia, especially Java and Bali, you can easily find these snacks in the pasar (Indonesian traditional market where locals purchase fresh produce). Each serving costs 2000 IDR, or less than 0.20 USD! It's unbelievably cheap, isn't it? If you happen to be in Surabaya, there is a shop named Klepon Jaya Abadi (eternal success klepon). Located on Prof. Dr, Moestopo Street, this shop offers a wide variety of cassava cakes (klepon, cenil, gethuk, etc.). The price is around 5000 IDR (0.40 USD) per serving, which is double compared to the ones found in local traditional markets. Nevertheless, the taste is better (they have their secret recipe that make the cakes chewier, softer and more savory) and it is more hygienic, so it is a shop you may prefer to go if you are in the city.
