From the airport to the city center, it’s about 30 kilometers (18.64 miles). Usually, by car, it takes around an hour to get into the city, depending on traffic. Sometimes it’s less. The best way to get there might be by car, or if you’re in a hurry, you can go via train, which is also affordable. Taxis are easy to find. There are taxi counters at the airport, and you can also use online platforms such as Grab, which are readily available.

2. What are some good places to visit nearby?

Nearby cities such as Bogor and Bandung are quite popular among people traveling from Jakarta. From Jakarta to Bogor, it takes about an hour and a half. To reach Bandung city from Jakarta, it takes about two and a half hours.

Tourists can use private cars or buses, but it’s better if they use private cars. If they opt for buses, they may need to make multiple stops along the way.

3. What's the most affordable way for tourists to get around the city?

The cheapest way would be to use public buses.

4. Are there any travel passes or cards available for tourists to help save on transportation costs?

There is a card called electronic money or e-money, similar to an ATM card. You can purchase it at bus stations and use it for the Transjakarta buses, which connect various parts of the city. It’s cheaper than buying individual tickets for each bus ride. It operates within the city and also serves nearby cities, such as Tangerang and Bekasi. These are satellite cities that support Jakarta.

The card costs around 50,000 rupiah (3.12 USD). It already has a balance of about 30,000 rupiah (1.87 USD), which can be used to travel around the cities. Simply tap the card when boarding a bus, and then you can travel within the city. You can transfer to other buses at different stops to reach other areas.

5. Can visitors rent a car easily, and do they need an international driving permit for Jakarta?

You can find car rental services at the airport, online, and even at some hotels. I recommend renting a car from Bluebird.

You need an international driving license to drive in Jakarta.

Gojek and Grab provide taxis in Jakarta. There are usually some promotions available on both platforms. These are the two biggest platforms for online transportation in Indonesia, especially in Jakarta.

Try dishes such as gado-gado (Indonesian salad of raw, boiled, blanched or steamed vegetables and hard-boiled eggs, fried tofu and tempeh, which is made from fermented soybeans, and sliced rice cake, served with a peanut sauce), fried rice, satay (skewered and grilled meat, served with a sauce), and bakso (meatballs), which are popular in Jakarta.

There are several 24-hour pharmacies, clinics, and hospitals available for emergencies. There are specific areas such as West Jakarta where there are 24-hour clinics. Klinik Pratama Semanan is one such example. Most hospitals also run around the clock. For pharmacies, there is K-24 Drug Store.

Visitors can go directly to the drug store and mention the medicines they would like to buy. Having a prescription is better, but some medicines are available without one.

In June, we celebrate Jakarta’s city birthday. In various areas, there are cultural events, festivals, and sometimes carnivals. Especially in June, we have many cultural events, including dances and performances on stage. Some areas also host carnivals during this time. One notable date is June 22nd, when Jakarta’s birthday is celebrated. During this celebration, there are often carnivals as well. Another significant event is on August 17th, when we celebrate independence. There are also carnivals around this time, although they’re usually not in central Jakarta, but in neighborhood areas.
