Getting Around In Sharjah
How far away is city center from the airport, and what's the easiest way to get there?
The city center is approximately 20 to 25 minutes away from the airport, depending on traffic conditions. The most convenient way to reach the city center is by taxi, as it provides a direct route via the Sharjah Dahid Road. While there may be buses available, it’s recommended to inquire about their schedules and prices, as they might be associated with airlines rather than the airport directly.
Local Food
What are some of the best local food to try in Sharjah?
Local delicacies such as machboos (rice and lamb, chicken, fish, or shrimp cooked in warm whole spices) offer a taste of traditional Emirati cuisine. Additionally, dishes such as harees (boiled, cracked, or coarsely-ground wheat or bulgur, mixed with meat and seasoned; usually made with lamb or chicken), luqaimat (deep-fried balls of pastry covered in date syrup or honey), and biryani (slow-cooked meat and rice) are highly recommended. Dates, a staple in the region, are also worth trying for their unique flavors.
Healthcare
What healthcare facilities are available for tourists/foreigners in Sharjah?
In case of emergencies, travelers can go to any nearby clinic or hospital. Sharjah has numerous hospitals, including governmental hospitals like Al-Asimi Hospital as well as private hospitals and clinics. If an emergency occurs in a hotel or another location where the person is unable to go to the hospital, they can call an ambulance at 998. The emergency number for the police is 999, and for the fire department, it’s 997. It is also recommended to keep the emergency numbers of embassies handy. For example, UAE nationals traveling abroad should keep their embassy’s emergency number, as they can provide valuable assistance. There are plenty of hospitals and clinics available in the city and nearby areas.
Staying Connected
Should travelers consider getting a local SIM card? If so, would it be cheaper to grab one at the airport upon arrival or wait and buy one at a local shop in the city?
Yes, it’s good to get a local SIM. It’s not necessarily cheaper at the airport, but it’s more convenient. While you might find the same price elsewhere, buying at the airport ensures you won’t waste time searching for it in local markets, where availability can vary.
Money Matters
Where can you usually find the best exchange rate in the city?
The best places to exchange currency are at dedicated exchange shops, particularly those found in downtown areas and shopping malls. Around 80% of shopping malls have exchange shops. It’s advisable to avoid exchanging currency at the airport or hotels, as they usually charge higher rates. Popular exchange shops include Ansari Exchange and Lulu Exchange.
Important Travel Info
Are there any medications or items travelers should avoid bringing into the country?
Generally, as in any country, drugs are not allowed. Travelers must take precautions not to carry any suspected medications. If there is any medicine they need to bring, it’s better to seek advice from a doctor and obtain a prescription, just to be on the safe side. Other restricted items are clearly stated at the airport, such as guns, explosives, and other common prohibited items. Alcohol is also generally not allowed, except for purchases from duty-free shops. The only place in Sharjah where alcohol is allowed to be bought or sold is the duty-free shop at the airport. Outside of the duty-free, alcohol is not permitted. Attractions
Are there any dress codes to follow when visiting religious sites or monuments in Sharjah?
In Sharjah, appropriate attire is recommended, especially in public places and religious sites. While wearing an abaya (over-garment worn by Muslim women) is not mandatory, modest clothing is encouraged. For swimming, bikinis or similar attire are allowed at designated areas like hotel beaches or swimming pools. In public places, such as streets or shopping malls, dressing appropriately is required. When visiting religious sites, such as the House of Quran, a modest dress code should be observed. Nudity and public displays of affection, even between married couples, are prohibited to maintain moral and cultural standards.
What To Buy
Where are the best places to find souvenirs in Sharjah?
Al Shanasiyah Souq, located in the heart of Sharjah, is a great place to find local goods. The Central Souq, formerly known as the Islamic Souq, is another excellent spot, known for its beautiful mosaics and high-quality gold items. Additionally, for authentic local handicrafts, there are sources where handmade items by local women, such as bags, chains, and keychains, can be found. These items might not be available in the souqs but can be recommended by knowledgeable locals.
Climate Tips
What's the best time to travel to Sharjah weather-wise? Are there any seasons to avoid?
The best time to visit Sharjah, and the UAE in general, is between mid-November and mid-April. During this period, the weather is ideal for outdoor activities like hiking and walking, with pleasant temperatures and occasional rain.
While the summer months can be very hot, there are still places to visit that are comfortable. The Rain Room in Sharjah and the Wasit Wetland Reserve are air-conditioned and offer enjoyable experiences regardless of the heat. Theme parks and water parks also remain popular, and visiting in the late afternoon until midnight can be very pleasant. The east coast of the UAE, including Khorfakkan, can also be cooler and enjoyable even in summer nights, with occasional rain and quick temperature drops.
However, from the beginning of June to the end of October, it is not recommended to walk under direct sunlight for extended periods, especially for children and those not accustomed to the heat. Most shops and museums are air-conditioned, so moving from the car to the entrance is usually manageable.
Area Guide
Which neighborhoods in Sharjah have the best nightlife scene and events?
Al Majaz Waterfront and Al Qasba are popular spots for nightlife and entertainment in Sharjah. Al Qasba features a variety of restaurants and activities, including self-riding electrical boats on the canal. The area is particularly vibrant during weekends and special occasions like New Year’s and National Day, with fireworks and light festivals. Al Majaz Waterfront offers a range of activities for kids, a water fountain show every night, and numerous restaurants. There’s also a heritage boat ride available, providing a scenic tour of Khaled Lake.
