Yet, the chefs in these restaurants give a healthier and animal-friendly spin to the classic American breakfast and burgers, starring the natural flavours of ingredients that were once thought of as secondary to meat.

Europe

4. England

Contributed by Jonny Turnbull, PhD Student from Newcastle upon Tyne, England (vegan for 2.5 years)

The word ‘vegan’ was coined approximately seventy years ago by an English animal rights advocate, Donald Watson and together with a group of like-minded individuals; he founded The Vegan Society in 1944 which is still active in England. In view of the strong vegan and vegetarian traditions and the number of vegan offerings in England, it’s not surprising that many vegan travellers have no issue finding truly tantalizing plant-based meals.

Liutaio Music Café, Cambridge

“This is my favourite place in Cambridge. Amazing Chinese restaurant outside city centre with a huge range of vegan options and the non-vegan ones aren’t compromised, which is just nice as everyone feels welcome and it’s isn’t marked off as a ‘vegan restaurant’. There’s only one chef and the restaurant is covered with stringed instruments. Casual cafe vibes and it is relatively affordable for what you get (around 10-12 GBP for a decent amount of vegan buns).”

The Ship Inn, Newcastle upon Tyne

“This is the best pub in Newcastle in the Ouseburn Valley. They opened a vegan kitchen and do a range of things from burgers and tacos to fish and chips. It’s about 12 GBP for a main here and the beer selection is very good (lots of real ales but also craft beers etc.). Its location is perfect - right next to another 3 or 4 excellent pubs (but they don’t do vegan food). It’s like the repurposing of a pub where you have your old men drinkers and your vegan eaters. I’m part of a project on meat and masculinity and the research is done in this pub as it’s a familiar environment for men but one where the stereotypes of meat and masculinity are challenged.”

The Ship Inn

Address: Stepney Bank, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 2PW, UK

Opening hours: Sun - Thurs: 12pm - 11pm, Fri - Sat: 12pm - 12am

Grumpy Panda, Newcastle upon Tyne

“A place serving American fast food - you’ll have to try the dirty fries and one of their burgers (they have a wide range). This is the best place if you’re looking for classic fast food - so lots of milkshakes and Oreo desserts. You would probably spend around 14 GBP here.”

Grumpy Panda

“This is a really great vegetarian-friendly restaurant in the heart of Barcelona. Located next to MACBA (the hotspot for skateboarders), sit alfresco and enjoy the tapas here. However, the showstopper at Kino is the fried avocado which is served with a jalepeño sauce.”

Carrer de Blai - Pinchos

Each pincho is usually constructed using a skewer, and typically, the bar displays them in a buffet style so you simply take what you want and the sticks are counted at the end to calculate your bill. Each pincho is roughly 1 EUR. There are a few veggie-friendly spots along Carrer de Blai, many places have a separate section for vegetarian pinchos. For a true Catalan experience, be sure to spend an evening bar hopping and eating pinchos on Carrer de Blai.”

My favourite, which is always on the menu, is the roasted cauliflower (with tahini, pomegranate, salsa and pine nuts). This is the pricier option from my recommendations, as you can expect to pay anywhere between 20-30 EUR per person for a meal.”

8. Israel

Contributed by Naomi Baum, Trip101 Writer living in Israel

Ever wondered why Israel is considered the capital for vegan dining? There are a few main reasons. Firstly, the civil war in 1948 impacted the availability and affordability of meat and therefore changed people’s diets. Secondly, Israeli cuisine is naturally plant-based and mainly use vegetables, legumes and grains (think hummus and falafel). Lastly, as most people are brought up eating kosher food, they are used to thinking about their food before eating (and almost all vegan food is kosher). The coastal city of Tel Aviv that boasts Israel’s best vegan-friendly restaurants has taken its plant-based dinning a step further by hosting world’s largest vegan festival which draws tens of thousands of vegan and vegetarian visitors annually.

Asia

9. The Philippines

Contributed by Christian Markle, Trip101 Writer and Freelance Writer from Manila, Philippines (Have been eating vegan and vegetarian food for many years)

It’s no coincidence that Asian cultures tend to approach vegetables with a little more creativity in comparison to the West, as much of the Asian cooking is authentically vegetarian. And Filipino cuisine is no exception. Through harmonising the contrasting tastes of sweet, sour, savoury and bitter; with the aid of seasonal vegetables, aromatic garlic and bountiful herbs, Asian chefs can add a whole new flavour dimension to any simple vegetable dish.

11. Thailand

Contributed by Hannah Bryant, Trip101 Writer and Freelance Writer from Essex, England (vegetarian for 15 years, vegan for 1 year)

At first glance, vegan and vegetarian travellers may find their trip to Thailand a little disappointing, given that most Thai dishes are often served with fish sauce or cooked in meat broth. Nonetheless, the long-lasting influence of Buddhism has sown seeds for vegan and vegetarian cuisine that continues to flourish to this day. All you need to do is mention the words “gin jay” and it would flag your dietary requirements to the waiter or cook.

12. Indonesia

Contributed by Arakita R. Rimbayana, Travel Writer and Translator from Bandung, Indonesia (vegan for 6 months)

Indonesia is another tricky country to find vegan and vegetarian food because many dishes use fish/prawn paste or have meat in them. However, that’s not to say that there are no options. In popular cities and islands (particularly Bali where the number of tourists and expats have created a demand for plant-based food), there are plenty of vegan or vegetarian options. Dishes are often seasoned with chillies and spices or punched up with touches of sweet coconut milk and sour fermented bean paste that help enrich the meatless repertoire by giving vegetables a piquant flavour.
