Catedral de la Asunción, or Ascension Cathedral, stands over 90 feet (27.4 m) tall and it is the main cathedral, for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese, in the beautiful city of Hermosillo. The new cathedral’s construction began in 1887, and it is now more commonly referred to as Hermosillo Catherdral. It is one of the more evocative structures in the city and the small chapel that preceded the current one was built in the 18th century. If one is perceptive enough, they can almost feel the history of the place. Its neoclassical design, with elements of neogothic architecture, makes it stand out. The building was promoted by the then Bishop Herculano López de la Mora and was consecrated before it was even completed, in 1908.
