Lampung, a province on the southern tip of Sumatra Island, is the first entry point to Sumatra from Java Island. You can reach Lampung by plane from major cities in Indonesia, or you can take the ferry from Merak port, 100 kilometers (62 miles) from Jakarta, to Bakauheni port, south of the Lampung capital city, Bandar Lampung. Sumatra Island is one of the rich tropical forest islands in Indonesia, and Lampung provides the first experience of a tropical holiday with its tropical climate, nature and animals.
1. Meet the dolphins at Kiluan Bay
Dolphin watching at Kiluan Bay is the top holiday activity for Lampung province. Kiluan Bay is situated at the edge of Sumatra Island, where you can reach the Indian Ocean within 20 minutes of sailing and meet the wild dolphins making their way to the Pacific Ocean. You can book your Kiluan Bay tour from Bandar Lampung, where they will provide the transportation, the homestay and the “jukung” boat for the dolphin watch. Wake up early and sail to the ocean around 6 am and wait patiently. Slowly but surely, you will see hundreds and thousands of the bottlenose dolphins and the spinner dolphins. Famously known as friendly and playful animal, they will not hesitate to approach your jukung, or just jump in the air right in front of your eyes. Be sure to have your camera ready! After the dolphin watch, you can stop at Kiluan Island and have snorkeling time or just relax on its white sandy beach. Kiluan Beach is the nesting grounds of the green sea turtles and the hawksbill turtles, maybe you will get lucky and see the baby turtles walking slowly to reach the sea!

2. Break the waves at Tanjung Setia Beach
Tanjung Setia beach, located a 6-7 hours drive to the west of Bandar Lampung, is famous among wave hunters, which we know by heart as “surfers”. It’s a secluded beach behind the Bukit Barisan National Park and lies directly on the Indian Ocean, which currents’ make constant perfect waves, adored by surfers. And yet, Tanjung Setia Beach is still unspoiled by heavy tourism, which enables the beautiful beach to maintain its virgin condition. Tanjung Setia Beach offers a combination of adrenalin-pumping activity with a relaxing uncrowded space. It’s a hidden pearl!
3. Up close and personal with the elephants at Way Kambas National Park
The signature holiday activity of Lampung, Way Kambas National Park is the sanctuary of the endangered Sumatran elephants, Sumatran tigers, and Sumatran rhinoceroses. At the elephant’s training centre, visitors can observe elephants perform various tasks such as transporting lumber or plowing fields. Those elephants can also perform peculiar activities, such as play football. You can also take an elephant riding tour, or take a canoe ride at Way Kanan River to explore the waterway. You will see other forest inhabitants such as the siamang, a type of primate, and birds in this lush tropical forest.

4. Swimming at Putri Malu Waterfall
While you are at Way Kanan River, take the opportunity to visit Putri Malu Waterfall. The Putri Malu, (in English: Shy Princess), waterfall name came from the shape of the rocks, like the back of a lady, that formed the waterfall. It’s beautiful and the current is not strong, so it’s the perfect place to swim and relax among the lush tropical forest.

5. Hike the Child of Krakatoa Mount and snorkel at Sebuku and Sebesi Island
Hiking the Child of Krakatoa Mount was my favorite activity when I visited Lampung due to its legendary history. In 1883, the Mount Krakatoa erupted and destroyed over two-thirds of the Sumatra Island, unleashing huge tsunamis, and killing over 36,000 people. The explosion is considered to be the loudest sound ever heard in modern history and the ashes spread all the way to Europe. In 1927, a new volcano, famously known as “Child of Krakatoa,” emerged from the 1883 caldera and has grown to be the new centre of eruptive activity. Due to its active volcano activity, you need to obtain an entry license from the Krakatoa National Park before you go there. It’s advised to take a package tour, where they will supply the necessary license to visit the mountain. The Child of Krakatoa Mount hiking trek is an easy level. It’s slippery due to the volcanic sands, so make sure you are wearing the correct shoes. After you finish the hike, head out to Sebuku and Sebesi Island for snorkeling. It’s a great way to cool down after a great hike.

6. Fishing at Kubur Island
If you are not into hiking an active volcano mountain and snorkeling, you can take a fishing boat and try your luck at Kubur Island. Kubur Island is actually a large cluster of corals and is surrounded by the ocean, which makes it a perfect place for big fish to congregate. You can rent a motorboat to take you not far from the location of the island, and you can start swinging your bait from the motorboat to the nearest coral around the island.

7. Pump your adrenaline at Condong Sulah Island
Condong Sulah Island, known as Condong Island, is famous for its adrenaline pumping activities. The southern part of the island can be used for rock climbing or hiking and you will see wild monkeys foraging around the island. The waters are very clear and calm, so you can snorkel and swim. Condong Sulah Island is also famous for diving practices. End your day at the West side of the island to catch the beautiful sunset.

8. Sand walking at Sari Ringgung Beach
Walk the phenomenal sand island of Sari Ringgung Beach at low tide. It’s a 15-25 minute boat ride from Sari Ringgung Beach. You can also visit the floating mosque nearby, that was built on top of the floating fish cages, so it moves whenever the waves come. It’s the perfect place to relax after some busy holiday itineraries!

9. Explore the Curup Tujuh Waterfall
Complete your tropical experiences by exploring the Curup Tujuh Waterfall, a 75 meter (246 foot) high waterfall at Central Lampung. The name of Curup Tujuh (in English: seven levels), waterfall came from the rocks and natural formation, divided into seven levels. You can visit each level by taking a four-wheel drive and some long walks, but there are also bike trails as an option if you don’t like walking. You will be granted with stunning views from different levels of height.
10. Visit The Pugung Raharjo Ancient Park
Editor's Note: There's no photo available at the time of writing
In between the tropical climate area, Lampung has successfully preserved the ancient park of Pugung Raharjo. The ancient waterways and the megalithic water sources show the ancient histories that formed Sumatran culture at the beginning of its civilization. It is a fascinating stop not to be missed.
