Schweinfurt was a prominent city during World War II as a refuge for the US military. But since this closed in the year 2014, the German City called “swine ford” today is a growing culture of progress and, of course, culture. Located in the Lower Franconia region of Bavaria, Schweinfurt is one of the best places to visit in Germany.

1. Relive the German Renaissance at the Altes Gymnasium

Built during the German Renaissance in 1582, this magnificent structure is an epitome of Schweinfurt’s rich heritage. At one time the Swedish King Gustav Adolf wanted to build a protestant university in this structure, but his untimely death halted the said project. The Altes became a museum instead in 1934. The museum tour features the citizen’s culture, guild life and the beginnings of industrialisation in the region. It is without a doubt that visitors will further appreciate the city’s wealthy medieval past. Jewels such as silver and gold from local guilds can be seen as well as the first pedal bike from Schweinfurt inventor Philipp Moritz Fischer. Another gem of the museum is the memorial room of Friedrich-Rückert-Zimmer, a celebrated poet and orientalist.

This lesser known bike trail is much appreciated by nature lovers who love biking as much. The 78-kilometer (48 mile) trail covers the spring of the Wern River all the way to the Main River at Gemünden-Wernfeld. This trail is best for families because there are not much climbs and it is well-marked. It will surely be a breath of fresh air once traversing the trail with sightseeing in the beauty of Franconia.
