1. Relive the German Renaissance at the Altes Gymnasium

Built during the German Renaissance in 1582, this magnificent structure is an epitome of Schweinfurt’s rich heritage. At one time the Swedish King Gustav Adolf wanted to build a protestant university in this structure, but his untimely death halted the said project. The Altes became a museum instead in 1934. The museum tour features the citizen’s culture, guild life and the beginnings of industrialisation in the region. The Georg Schaefer Museum showcases the private art collection of art enthusiast and industrialist Georg Shafer. The collection includes about 950 paintings of which 160 of those were created by artist Carl Spitzweg. Other works of art in the museum were done by Caspar David Friedrich, Jakob Philipp Hackert, Franz Pforr, Wilhelm von Kobell, Carl Spitzweg, Friedrich Overbeck, Adolph von Menzel, and Max Slevogt, among others. These artists were mostly from German-speaking countries. The museum is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm.
