Seminyak, Ubud, and Kuta are the most popular areas in Bali, but in the South, there’s an equally stunning place. Uluwatu will enthrall you with its historic and cultural attractions, beaches, and views of the Indian Ocean. The area has plenty of gems, and this list is more than happy to help you out. Here are the 7 best things to do in Uluwatu. Don’t forget to bring your swimsuits and your camera!

1. Take a trip to Uluwatu Temple and watch the Kecak Fire Dance

Located on the top of a cliff 70 meters (230 feet) above sea level, Uluwatu Temple is well-renowned for its traditional Balinese architecture, centuries-old sculptures, and splendid views of the sunset and the Indian Ocean. Prepare to be mesmerized by the sights as you explore the temple, which is one of Bali’s holiest places of worship. In front of the site is a forest where you will see monkeys roaming around. These monkeys are believed to be protectors of the structure. Entrance fee is around 3 USD, and if you’re wearing shorts, you will be given a sarong and sash. Another highlight of the temple is the awe-inspiring Kecak Fire Dance, which is from 6:00pm to 7:00 pm and takes place at the amphitheater. For around 5 USD, you will see an artistic interpretation of the famous Ramayana epic through traditional dances. The music is provided not by instruments, but with the voices of the performers.

Take in the gorgeous sunset at Uluwatu Temple — a Balinese temple to the sea gods dating from the 10th century — which offers a commanding view of the Indian Ocean from the clifftops. Visitors are required to wear the provided sarong or sash, and women who are on their period are not allowed to enter the main area of the temple. Make sure to keep an eye on your belongings, especially when there are monkeys around.
