The town of Loris is just a 10 minute car ride to the border with North Carolina and is near South Carolina’s most eastern corner. Myrtle Beach is just a 40 minute drive and Conway is a 30 minute drive. Loris is a small community-driven town that has fewer than 3,000 residents. Travelers can have a fun afternoon talking a pleasant walk down the village historical district with its brick buildings and tree-lined streets after enjoying the plenty of outdoor activities available in Loris.

1. Loris Bog-Off



The Loris Bog-Off is an annual festival that takes place each year on the third Saturday in October. The event is a great display of local food, art and music. The festival is also home to a large kid’s play pavilion, car show, concert and fireworks show. The event first began in 1980 as a chicken bog cooking competition, but over the years it has grown to include so much more. The festival has over 200 vendors and usually attracts over 35,000 guests each year. The Loris Bog-Off is a great family friendly event that gives guests a fun day to experience the local culture of this small town on a large scale.

2. Springwater Farm

Relax by the lake at this wonderful vacation home. Springwater Farm is 150 acres of private land with a 16 acre lake that is the host of many outdoor activities. Booking with this home grants guests access use of the fishing boat, canoe and paddles boards to be used on the lake. The home is pet friendly, so feel free to bring a boat dog that would enjoy the time outdoors. The home itself has three bedrooms, washer and dryer units, Wifi and compete kitchen. This is a great option for those looking for some alone time with nature near Loris.

3. Shorty's Grill



If you cannot get enough of southern food, stopping here after a day outside is a great way to recover. Shorty’s Grill is a family run business located right in the middle of Loris. This local favorite serves breakfast, lunch and dinner from Monday to Saturday, 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. The restaurant is great for children and also accommodates take-out orders for those on the go. Previous guests have loved their fried chicken, hamburger steak and breakfast. Guests also remarked that the staff was friendly and hospitable and that the service was top notch.

Another great food option for breaks after the outdoors, The Grind is a restaurant that focuses on locally produced foods to nourish the community. This repurposed gas station from the 1920s is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and also serves coffee all day. It is open from Mondays to Fridays 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. This restaurant and deli combination serves a variety of foods, including soups, smoothies, salads, pies, sandwiches and much more. Guests have said the food was fresh and delicious and that they enjoyed the friendly staff. It is very evident that the owners of this quaint establishment put a lot of time, effort and love into its being. Stopping here means not just supporting a local business but also supporting a lifestyle worth saving.

5. Red Wind Stables

Located about a 15 minute drive outside of downtown Loris is Red Wind Stables, an equestrian center focused on recreation and fitness through horseback riding. Instructors here teach the English style of riding, as well as equestrian jumping. This small ranch is highly rated among its patrons.

6. Go Ape Zip Line and Treetop Adventure

Located in North Myrtle Beach, about a 30-minute drive from Loris, is the Go Ape Zip Line and Treetop Adventure. Go Ape is more than just a series of zip lines though, it prides itself on being an adventure through the canopy of the South Carolina forest that will provide you with views of the area not seen before. 10 years of age is the minimum age to participate in the Treetop Adventure, and 139 centimeters (4 feet 7 inches) is the minimum height. The maximum weight for guests is 129 kilograms (285 pounds). The longest zip line in this area is 279 meters (918 feet) long, and the highest platform is 18 meters (60 feet) high. The price for this activity is 58 USD for guests 16 years old and up, and 38 USD for guests ages 10 through 15. There must be at least one adult over the age of 18 to supervise no more than two children under 15 at a time.

For younger guests the Treetop Junior is a more appropriate activity that is available for all ages, with a minimum height of 99 centimeters (3 feet 3 inches). Tickets for those ages 16 and 17 are 25 USD and all others are 28 USD. Go Ape is proud to have helped many people get over their fear of heights, so don’t let that stop you from having fun at the great facility that connects you to nature in a new way.

7. Alligator Adventure

Get up close and personal with some of Earth’s most incredible reptile in addition to a host of other animals at Alligator Adventure. Located in Myrtle Beach, about a 30 minute drive from Loris, the 15 acres of Alligator Adventure is home to over 2000 species of animals including alligators, birds, frogs, lizards, snakes, mammals and more. Admission is 22.99 USD for adults (ages 13 through 61), 20.99 USD for seniors (age 62 and over), 19 USD for military members and 16.99 USD for children (ages 4 through 12) and children 3 years of age and younger have free admission. The park hosts live shows with a variety of topics including: alligator feedings, alligator handling lectures, and snake handling. Alligator Adventure is a great attraction for both children as well as adults, that gets us back outside and learning about nature.
