1. Wakefield Cathedral

In the near centre of Wakefield sits the magnificent Wakefield Cathedral, or the even grander title of the Cathedral Church of All Saints in Wakefield. Although we owe the Victorians for Wakefield Cathedral’s current appearance, restored and reopened in 1888, it has been a place of worship since the 9th-century, and has even been mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086. Today, anyone can come and have an informal, 45 minute tour of this historic cathedral, with no booking required and completely free! Overlooking the River Calder, sits the ruined medieval castle, Sandal Castle. 4. Theatre Royal Wakefield

5. Nostell Priory and Parkland

One of the more stunning sites on this list is the ancient and prestigious Nostell Priory. The foundations for this place were first laid in the early 12th-century, but the Palladian Mansion we see now, was built in 1727 but the 4th Baronet, Sir Rowland Winn, who was inspired by the years he spent traveling abroad. The inside of Nostell Priory are well-maintained and many visitors are blown away by the beauty and detail that went into creating each and every room. 6. Newmillerdam Country Park

This local nature reserve is located south of Wakefield and features a central lake including the Boathouse, which was built in the 1820s. Newmillerdam Country Park has existed since the 13th-century, and has remained a beautiful spot for birdwatching, with swan’s, mallard’s and coots. In the summer mouths you can even spot bats flying above the lake! Parking in very cheap for this natural haven, only costing up to 3 USD for 4+ hours, with a maximum 10 hour stay. 8. Unity Works

Created in 1867, Unity Hall has been an integral part of the community, providing a space for conferences and fundraisers, but also dances and concerts.
