Tent-only campgrounds

1. Columbia Icefield Campground

Columbia Icefield Campground has 33 tents. It is commonly used by mountaineers as a base camp as it lies close to mountain peaks such as Mount Athabasca, Mount Wilcox, Mount Andromeda, and Mount Kitchener. Camping here lets you enjoy breathtaking nature views and access to facilities such as camp kitchens, picnic tables, fire pits, potable water, and dry toilets.

The campground has surrounding trails too. A short hike to the east leads to Parkers Ridge, where you will see the scenic Saskatchewan Glacier. You can access Wilcox Pass behind the campground and witness the Snow Dome. The best time to visit the Columbia Icefields is from May to September. But the campground opens in June on a first-come, first-serve basis.

2. Whistler's oTENTiks

Whistler’s Campground is ideal for vacationing families. It offers canvas-walled, wooden-floored tents called oTENTiks that can comfortably accommodate four adults and two children. Select tents can even welcome your lovely pets.

Whistler’s Campground, roughly five kilometers/three miles south of Jasper, has a total of 21 units. Each unit has beds, electric heaters and lights, wooden chairs, outdoor benches, and tables. It also features shared amenities such as cooking houses and stone playhouses. It usually opens in June, but do contact Parks Canada Reservation Service for inquiries.

At Snaring Campground, you can choose to stay in tents on the sunny side of the river or park your RV under the shade of the trees. Its facilities include outhouses, potable water, trash receptacles, and fire rings. The location is ideal for campers who want a day or two of easy backcountry camping as it’s about a 10-minute drive from the town of Jasper.

The campground has 66 sites and opens from mid-May to mid-September. However, it operates on a first-come, first-serve basis. Besides the basic comforts and scenic river views, you’ll love knowing that your pets are welcome here. Together, you can fish and have a picnic at the tables provided.

4. Wilcox Creek Campground

Wilcox Creek Campground has 46 campsites with tents and RV parking spaces. It is ideal for families and groups driving RVs not greater than 30 feet (9.14 meters) in length as the turns are rather sharp and the roads narrow.

The campground is close to Parker Ridge (about 3 kilometers or 1.86 miles) and Wilcox Trailhead, a moderate trail you can take with young children. In both places, you will see stunning views of snow-capped mountains. Its facilities include dry toilets, potable water, fire pits, tables and benches, a dump station, and a camp kitchen. Since it accepts visitors on a first-come, first-serve basis, check-in early during peak camping season. You can come here as early as June.

5. Wabasso Campground

The riverfront Wabasso Campground affords you calming views of the Athabasca River and easy access to hiking trails. It is also close to Mount Edith. It opens from May to September and features 231 campsites for tents and RVs.

You can choose Wabasso Campground if you are camping with your family as it offers a playground, sheltered kitchens, flush toilets, water stations, picnic tables, and garbage bins. There is also power supply that will keep every member of your family or group comfortable.

Wapiti Campground is one of the largest campgrounds within Jasper National Park, encompassing a total of 363 sites for tents and RVs (hookups for electricity available). Families with kids and groups of friends can camp here as it is close to the town of Jasper (3 kilometers or 1.86 miles away) and natural attractions, including Maligne Canyon, Pyramid Lake, Hanging Valley, Miette Hot Springs, and Mount Edith Cavell.

Wapiti Campground facilities include flush toilets, camp kitchens, dump stations, and fire pits. As it can get crowded from May to October, you’ll want to come early. The campground accepts visitors on a first-come, first-serve basis.

7. Pocahontas Campground

Pocahontas Campground, with 140 campsites, accepts reservations from June to September. It is ideal for smaller RVs, although it has available walk-in tents. Here, you’ll have access to picnic tables, flush toilets, fireboxes, and potable water. Thankfully, the campground has disability access, allowing your differently-abled family and friends to enjoy Jasper’s natural beauty with you.

The majestic Punch Bowl Falls and the historic Old Pochahontas Mine are only a short walk away from the campsite. You can also take a short drive to Miette Hot Springs.

8. Honeymoon Lake Campground

This dreamy campground lies west of the serenely beautiful Honeymoon Lake and it is small and private, featuring 35 sites for tents and RV pitches. It is ideal for couples who want an intimate vacation, camping professionals who need a silent retreat, and families who want to spend quality time together.

Honeymoon Lake Campground also lies within walking distance of Buck Lake and Osprey Lake. Plus, you can drive to other attractions, such as Mount Edith Cavell, Sunwapta Falls, and Athabasca Falls. The campground offers potable water, trash bins, food storage, a sheltered kitchen, picnic tables, fire pits, and a public payphone. Please note that self-registration from May to September is accepted and it’s on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Invite your friends over for a full day or an overnight camping experience at Whirlpool Group Campground. This alpine-surround campground accepts reservations starting in June. The maximum number of people allowed here is 50, while the minimum is 15.

This gated campground is close to a river, atop a hill, so you get stunning overlooking nature views at any time of the day. Here, you can find basic essentials such as a cook shelter, picnic tables, tent pads, a fire pit, food storage, potable water supply, and outhouses. Moab Lake is only a short walk away, and so is the lightly trafficked Whirlpool Valley Fire Trail.

10. Mount Kerkeslin Campground

Mount Kerkeslin Campground has 42 sites for both tents and smaller-sized RVs. But based on reviews, this campground is better suited for tent camping. You’ll have access to potable water, a public payphone, dry toilets, a cook shelter, and garbage bins. There are also picnic tables surrounded by mature fir and spruce trees that you can use.

Stay here from May until September and enjoy the lovely views of Mount Fryatt. You can walk up to the bank of the Athabasca River with your folding camp chairs and enjoy the river views with a cup of coffee. Note that it accommodates campers on a first-come, first-serve basis.
