Amsterdam lies on an elaborate canal system and it is the capital of the Netherlands. The city has a number of interesting museums, including the Van Gogh Museum, displaying works by the famous artist. Vondelpark is an interesting and spacious park which features an open-air theater. Enjoy a main dish and two side dishes, choosing from sweet potato and chickpea curry, chicken thighs, fishcakes, Thai red curry or lasagne Bolognese. Side dishes include marinated beetroot, eggplant from the oven or spicy bean salad. Leave a little room for one of the three delicious desserts, which include lime cheesecake, carrot cake and chocolate mascarpone cake. Menu prices range from 9 USD to 13 USD.

Getto opened in 1996 and it is a place where gay people, bi-sexuals, lesbians and straight people can meet, eat, drink and have fun. In a colorful setting, guests can enjoy an international menu, based on locally sourced fresh ingredients and varying depending on the season. What they dub a “home cooking style” includes meat and vegetarian options. The restaurant and bar are famous for its Diva Burgers, Nacho Munco Munchos, Getto Mega Mix and their own “homo” fries. A blackboard in the restaurant reveals the latest seasonal specials. Cocktails can be enjoyed in the lounge. Affordable prices range from 11 USD to 20 USD.

Peperwortel opened in 1995 and it is a popular restaurant for locals and visitors alike. In June, July and August, a second location is opened close to the Open Air Theater in Vondelpark. The restaurant serves lunches, including quiches, tapas, freshly prepared meals and desserts on the outside benches, including a range of cuisines. Asian, Mexican and Mediterranean influences are tasted in the menu options. There is also a good variety of sandwiches to choose from for a lighter meal. Meals are accompanied by an excellent range of French, Spanish and Italian wines. Prices range from 13 USD to 16 USD.

Due to its popularity, Spaghetteria has nine locations in Amsterdam, Utrecht and Rotterdam and it works on a “first come, first served” principle, with no reservations made. The food on offer changes daily at each location, so there is no set menu. However, customers can enjoy a range of vegetarian ravioli, meat ragout, Tuscan sausage and “frutti di Mar” (fruits of the sea) on a seasonal basis. Pasta is home-made on the premises.
