Located just outside the growing resort of Ocho Rios, hidden away behind luscious green vegetation lies one of Jamaica’s greatest national treasures: Dunn’s River Falls. Referred to as a ‘living phenomenon’ by geologists because of its unique ability to continuously regenerate itself combined with its stunning sea location, Dunn’s River Falls is the only one of its kind in Jamaica, if not the world.

Sitting at 180 feet high (54 meters) and 600 feet (182 meters) wide, this inimitable waterfall offers an exhilarating experience for sightseers and thrill-seekers alike.

Entry information

View from the climb

The falls are open daily from 8:30 am to 4 pm and on Cruise Ship Days (Wednesday to Friday) 7:00 am to 4:00 pm. Entrance fees are 12 USD/1466 JMD for children and 20 USD/2444 JMD for adults. If you’re lucky enough to be a Jamaican resident, bring along a valid identification card for a discounted ticket price.

Waterproof shoes are essential when climbing the falls as the rocks are notoriously slippery. If you can, buy your waterproof shoes before you arrive to avoid being overcharged; there are shops close by in Ocho Rios where you can pick up a pair for under 10 USD/1222.3 JMD. You can thank me later!

Those who are worried about their belongings getting wet, don’t be! Lockers are widely available across the site and are free to use.

Top Tip: Try to visit the falls when the cruise ship isn’t in the dock! Although the experience is incredibly personal; it can get busy on these days.

Climbing the falls

Dunn’s River Falls has been climbed by tourists and locals for so long that many believe the waterfall was specifically made for climbing. In truth, everything from the structure to the natural cascades and pools are completely natural. Also rumoured to be the sight of the famous Battle of Las Chorreras between the Spanish and the English in 1657, the falls are not only brimming with natural beauty, but history too.

Guided tours are available upon arrival and are carried out in the form of a single file, human chain. On average, a guided tour takes around an hour and a half to complete, stopping to take videos and pictures in the lagoons and pools on the way.

Going it alone

Climbing without the guides

Braver climbers can go it alone; the advantage of this is that you can create your own unique adventure, explore different routes and climb the falls for an unlimited amount of time. You can, of course, take part in both the guided tour and a solo climb; there are no time restrictions once you’ve entered the park.

For the vicarious climber, take in the breath-taking views from one of the many safe vantage points located across the falls in the form of terraces and decks.

After the climb

If you’ve worked up an appetite after an action packed day of climbing, head on over to the Cafeteria and sample some authentic spicy jerk chicken, curried goat or delicious local fish. There are several barbecue pits scattered around the park along with picnic areas if you prefer to bring your own food and drink.

Sun worshipers can relax on the beach and take in the views from a ‘safer distance ‘or just take some time out exploring the picturesque surrounding gardens.

For lovers of wood carvings, crafts and original art, you will be satisfied in the craft park located on the exit route. If you’re looking for something in particular, commission your own piece and collect it on your return.

So what are you waiting for?

Dunn’s River Falls has it all; exhilaration, history, culture and beauty in bounds. There is an experience for everyone whether you’re an explorer, beach bum or history buff – a personal experience awaits you.
