Just a few minutes on foot from Jogasaki Kaigan station in Izu, a bio and natural food café called Sora is waiting for you to fill your empty stomach. The café is surrounded by the opulent nature of Izu, making the space look like a tiny mountain hut.

Jogasaki Kaigan is a popular diving place for those who visit Izu. Because of its closeness to nature, both the marine life and the mountain life, there are many cafés and stores which are very health-conscious. Café Sora is definitely one of these cafés, and is both loved by the locals and the visitors who travel far away to enjoy the lovely Izu area.

It is a bio and natural food café, a perfect place for vegetarian and vegan people. Since the foundation of Japanese food is a balanced diet, it is hard for vegetarian and vegan travelers to find pure vegetarian and vegan dishes in Japan, but you do not need to worry here! At Sora, you will for sure find yummy vegan food, drinks, and even desserts!

Itadakimasu! Let’s have lunch!

Café Sora is only open for brunch, lunch, and afternoon tea time. It opens at 11:00 am so if you feel like resetting your batteries with a complete local and vegan lunch, this is the place to go. Lunchtime at Sora is from 12:00 to 14:00 (Sora also serves food after 14:00) and there is a special lunch menu. For lunch, you can have a satisfying meal under 1,000 yen (8 USD).

In the picture above, you can see Sora’s lunch plate, which is a vegan Japanese lunch plate. With miso soup on the side, it offers a variety of vegetables, all coming from local farms, and fried katsu (fried pork)-looking food, but it is all soy and vegetable based! You’ll be surprised, as it almost tastes like pork! On top of the lunch plate, you can choose other dishes like vegetarian taco rice and vegetarian curry for lunch.

Yum Yum! Let’s have some sweets!

Café Sora has a variety of sweets for your afternoon tea time. Of course, all the drinks and sweets served at the café are vegan! This lovely dessert is a tofu-based chocolate cake, which tastes just as good as non-vegan cakes that use eggs and dairy! If you have lunch at Sora and wants to have a drink and a dessert afterward, they give you a 100 JPY (0.8 USD) discount, so you might as well enjoy a complete course at Café Sora!

The space is open for well-behaved dogs as well!

One of the characteristics of Izu, particularly Izukogen living is how friendly the place is for dogs and families with dogs. Many cafés, restaurants, and stores are open for dog lovers. Café Sora is one of them. If you happen to travel with your dog, you can bring him in as long as he can behave.

On the day I visited the café, there was a very well behaved shiba dog sitting at the corner of the café. The truth is, I didn’t even realize he was here until the owner finished eating and was about to leave. There is also an outside seating area if you and your dog prefer seating outside.

Enjoy a taste of Izu life at Café Sora

If you are traveling to the Izu area or you are just passing by, Café Sora is a great place to stop by to get a yummy vegan lunch or dessert. A lot of Japanese people dream of living in Izu because of its beautiful location and also relaxed environment, so even you are just traveling there, you can get a memorable experience of what life looks like in Izu. If you happen to have a dog traveling with you, you can enjoy a great family lunch there too.
